Stop the Planet, I Want to Get Off!

Remember when having an opinion was fine? Remember when people didn’t get mad, just because you didn’t agree with them?

That hasn’t happened for a very long time.

I went back to Reddit, more out of boredom than anything else, and instead of diving into all of the religious and political subreddits that I’d been in before, I decided to play it cool. I started off with some TV and movie subreddits and some hobbies and decided I’d just relax.

That doesn’t really help.

You can’t say anything about anything without  getting attacked. Like a movie that other people don’t? You get attached. Don’t like a movie that other people do? You get attacked. Have any opinion of any kind? You’re  going to get attacked. You just can’t win.

Granted, I did join one political subreddit on centrism. I’m tired of both the left and the right. Centrism is about picking and choosing your views, based on logic and reason, not just following a party around by the nose. That isn’t going well either.

Granted, most people in this subreddit, they aren’t actually centrists. They are biased toward one of the extremes and they go after anyone who isn’t 100% on their side. Mostly, that’s the left-wing lunatics, but there are a fair number of right-wing zealots as well.

“Why are you even here?” You can’t ask that without a torrent of down votes. They’re there to attack people. It’s the only reason most people are even on Reddit these days, it seems. It’s like that old XKCD cartoon. Someone is “wrong” on the Internet. They have to be attacked!

Honestly, what’s the point anymore? It’s not like you can have a decent conversation these days. It doesn’t matter where you go, the most innocuous comment will get you attacked because someone, out there, doesn’t agree with you.

I honestly don’t know why I bother anymore. Somebody stop this crazy planet. I want to get off.

  1. Let’s build the Mothership for the like minded rationalists, I say in wishful thinking” I’m right there with ya. I’m a center-right learning centrist. I voted for Trump but was then shocked by the religious using him to try to get to some form of eventual theocracy. Barry Goldwater warned against the zealots taking over.

    1. Same here. Trump never said a religious word until he got the GOP nomination and then, he had to pander to his base. Today, I think he’s started drinking the Koolade and I would never vote for him again, or, at the moment, anyone else eyeing the White House. None of them deserve it.
