It Doesn’t Matter That They’re Dead!

I know I’ve said so before, but when your favorite celebrity kicks the bucket, it doesn’t mean the world is ending.  I get really tired of people whining and moaning that “so-and-so is dead!”

So what? Move the hell on!

Most recently, this came up when Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in a lot of early animated TV series and movies, died. I never knew him, I never met him, I did admire his work, but people die. You have to come to grips with that fact.

Yet here’s the thing. Conroy, as skilled a voice actor as he was, he hadn’t really done anything in the DC animated universe, what everyone was complaining about, for years. The last thing I’d seen was probably around 2010. Did he do a fantastic job in the 1997-1999 series “Batman: The Animated Series”? Absolutely. Yet now that he’s dead, his body of work doesn’t vanish with him. I can walk over to my shelves right now, grab my DVDs of that and watch them whenever I want. Same goes for Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League Unlimited, Superman: The Animated Series, etc. I’ve got them all. They’re not going anywhere.

In fact, he hasn’t done anything but voice work since about 2001. It’s not like Batman stops being produced now that he’s gone. They’ve moved on to other voice actors who are often just as good. So why cry?

If you knew him personally, then sure, you have a right to feel a sense of loss, but for most people whining, he’s just a stranger. They are acting like they actually lost something. They did not. They’re just acting like children.

This seems to happen every time anyone who has ever done anything drops dead. Whether it’s cancer, like what claimed Conroy, or anything else, there’s an endless wailing that happens and it’s just annoying. You haven’t lost anything! Most of the time, these dead celebrities haven’t worked in decades! It’s not like they were cut down in the prime of their lives. Everything you remember them for happened 30 years ago! Go watch it! It’s right there!

Honestly, can we please stop whining every time someone you’ve heard of drops dead? Can you please stop acting like it’s a tragedy? People die, especially old people. There are people right now mourning the death of Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac. She died today at the age of 79. Big deal! If you liked Fleetwood Mac’s music, that ended in the 90s. It’s still there. Go listen to it. She did very little recently, she’d pretty much retired and that was the end of it. So why all the hullabaloo about her death? Why do you actually care?

So much of this is about the fear of death, which I find positively childish. People die. Get over it. That’s how reality works. Absolutely everyone you have ever known is going to die if they’re not dead already. Adios. It’s not heartless to acknowledge reality. It’s healthy. It’s coming to grips with the actual reality that you live in. Knock off your blubbering and deal with it. The world won’t improve until people stop whining about everyone that keels over. They’re all going to. Grow the hell up and figure it out.
