I like Thomas Sowell in general, but even he has some problems, some blind spots that I think are endemic to social and political thinking and need to be pointed out.
Therefore, here I go, as I did in the comments on one of his videos, pointing out that it’s not just the left that have issues. The right is every bit as bad. Continue reading Where I Disagree with Thomas Sowell→
This is a short one, but I came across a video on YouTube and find the answer provided to be ridiculously wrong. It justĀ goes to show how poorly most people, even professional mathematicians, are at critical thinking.
This came up recently in a couple of other posts where I and a philosopher have been having a long, rambling discussion that’s had trouble sticking to a single point. That can be fun on occasion so I don’t mind a bit of meandering but one thing that I’ve noticed, and this isn’t meant to belittle my opponent, but they seem to be reacting in much the same way that I see with a lot of theists. “You just don’t understand!” Yet they seem incapable of just pointing out what I don’t understand, even though I’ve asked on several occasions, but more important than that, they don’t seem to be able to explain, in detail, *WHY* I’m supposedly wrong. Present your evidence and that doesn’t seem to be happening.
It might be because I’ve been talking a lot about philosophy lately, but I’ve been getting into a lot of philosophical discussions, sometimes from a theological bent. Whenever I question the validity of the supernatural or miracles or anything like that, I’m likely to get a claim of “but metaphysics!”
I find it very difficult to even watch so-called “vegan” content because the underlying assumptions made are just ludicrous IMO. Why? Because it’s all based on people’s fee-fees and as anyone who has watched my videos knows, I don’t give a damn about your feelings, only your facts. Any argument made on the basis of “but it makes me unhappy!” is just bullshit. I absolutely don’t care, which is why things like “ethical veganism” just make me roll my eyes. That’s why I decided to take a look at an article online trying to defend it and point out all of the places that it’s just ridiculously wrong. Continue reading The Rank Stupidity of Veganism→
I’ve been having a couple of different conversations of late but two in particular seem to dovetail nicely. First, there was one with a theist who insisted that we had to take things like the laws of logic on blind faith and secondly, one going on over on my YouTube channel right now with a philosopher who seems very self-satisfied that philosophy is the end-all-be-all of human intellect.
Last night, I had this conversation with a theist. It didn’t start off as a theistic discussion, it was about death with dignity and I had no clue it was with a theist when I started, but it all ties together nicely and shows just how clueless the religious actually are.
So let’s finish this up. It’s been a long road but we’re finally at the last section in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on atheism and agnosticism. This time is an argument against agnosticism and it will come as no surprise that they still don’t understand what the word means.
We’re getting close to the end of our look at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on atheism and agnosticism. This time, we’re on the last part of the supposed arguments for “local atheism“.
Now we’re into supposed arguments for local atheism and I don’t really expect to be excited by what they come up with, but you never know. We’re getting close to the end of the look at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on atheism and agnosticism. Is this going to go anywhere? Let’s plunge in and see.
