Why It’s Pointless to Argue Politics

I ran into a thread on Reddit today, where they were talking about atheists who are conservative, because they couldn’t imagine how anyone who was intelligent, educated and non-religious could identify that way.

Well, once upon a time, I identified that way, at least in a limited fashion, so I read through it and found that it was mostly people who were talking out of their own asses.

Somehow, that is not at all surprising.

Mostly, it was just screaming at anyone who didn’t think exactly like they did. It was full of irrational Trump hatred, pretending that they could read his mind and know what he really thought, mostly because they were asserting that he was trying to con the religious and ride their fervor into the White House.

How do they know any of this? No clue. They just seem really certain that they know what’s inside the head of other people, more than those other people do. Who else do we know that does the same thing? I’ll give you two guesses.

This is really something that’s incredibly common. They don’t want to actually engage with conservatives, they don’t want to ask conservative atheists why they think the way that they do, they just want to make bald assertions and play make believe. How do you have conversations with people who only want to talk to themselves and revel in their own confirmation bias?

So I didn’t bother. That’s becoming more and more common these days and on both sides. It’s the same thing that the religious have done forever. Pure confirmation bias and childish group-think and I, for one, am sick of it.

I run into this kind of thing all the time. Sadly, we live in a world where thinking for yourself is heresy. You aren’t allowed to question the narrative. This is why most people avoid the huge Reddit channel r/atheism, because it’s just a cult of left-wing lunatics and if you express anything that falls outside of their group-think, you instantly get banned. I got banned from there once for saying something demonstrably true, for which I provided links to the evidence, because they just didn’t like it. Hard pass on doing that ever again.

It’s no surprise that the world is such a mess when that’s the state of so-called “rational discourse”. What in the bloody hell is wrong with these people? How do I stop this insane world and get off?

Consider, for instance, the war in Vietnam in which the US was driven not by any realistic economic or political interest but by the overwhelming need to defeat “atheistic communism.”
