The Courts Can’t Be This Dumb!

I know they are, but how? I got called for jury duty. It’s not a big deal, they don’t want me anyhow, but I got called for next week and I’m going to be out of town.

Therefore, I jumped on the website to put it off and… well, you’ll have to see that for yourself. How can these people be so stupid? I sure don’t understand!

Putting it off isn’t supposed to be a big deal. I logged in and I had to fill out my juror number, the first three letters of my last name and my date of birth.

Sounds simple, right?

Except it is auto-populating “20” for year of birth. I guess nobody older than 23 can use it then, right?

I spent a good 15 minutes fighting with the thing. If you put in any date, it’s automatically “20-something”. If you try to delete it, it puts it back. If  you don’t fill anything in past the “20”, it tries to tell you that you were born in 20. 20-what? Who knows. That’s the calendar that comes up.

Eventually, I just started flipping through the calendars and if you go back far enough, it’ll let you get to “19”. It’s “1919” but apparently it’ll take that. Thereafter you can go through and modify it for the proper date, which I did. It just took far longer than it should have for such a simple thing.

How long has this been going on? People put off jury duty all the time, is this just meant to frustrate people into showing up? I’m not going to be there, sorry. I’m not going to be in the county. Hell, if things go right, I won’t even be in the state. It’s a lot more important to me to be where I have to be than to sit in a stuffy jury room and get dismissed anyhow.

It’s hard to believe just how dumb these people can be, but I guess this is the government so what can you expect? I’m just glad it eventually got done.
