Tired of Unjustified Bias

I’ve been doing a lot of re-evaluating lately, especially the social media that I consume. I’ve always recognized that there were problems with the YouTube channels that I watched and the social media platforms I perused because most of them are very openly biased. They have views that aren’t especially honest. They are based, in one way or another, on what they really want to be true.

I want to change it but I don’t know that I have a lot of options.

As I said, I’ve been aware of this for quite some time, especially in some quarters. For instance, a long time ago, back probably as far as 2016, I watched a couple of channels that were distinctly anti-left and pro-right. It became ridiculously obvious that they were just cherry picking anything that they could spin into a narrative that they were personally attached to. Therefore, I stopped watching them. I recognized the unwanted bias and moved away from it.

Today, I’m realizing the same thing is going on. Sure, I realize that my biases are being confirmed because some channels have specific aims to do so. When you start to see that channels are only talking about the things they want to talk about and ignoring all of the rest, it becomes time to exit, stage right.

Unfortunately, there seems to be nowhere else to go because that’s pretty much the order of the day in social-media-land. I went back to Reddit with a new account, just because I was bored and the first thing I did was avoid all of the hardcore political and religious subreddits. I knew that those were a mess. I knew that they were, almost without exception, left-wing echo chambers and I wanted nothing to do with that. I also wanted to avoid the right-wing echo chambers that I’d found elsewhere. I wanted somewhere in the middle, where intelligent people hung out.

That didn’t last for long. I realized that, with very few exceptions, most people had a very strong political bent. They were incapable of having intelligent conversations. They were unable to be remotely rational. Therefore, I walked away. I want nothing to do with that. Then, I left some of the big TV and movie subreddits because there, too, people were fixated on their views and they couldn’t brook any dissent. You either went along with the crowd or you got constantly attacked.

This is what politics has become.

The one thing that I realized is that these places aren’t even left or right. The political discourse has been irrevocably changed. Now, it’s “pro-Trump” or “Fuck Trump”. There is nothing else going on. Nobody can have a rational discussion because this is the height of discourse these days.

I want nothing at all to do with it. Yet there doesn’t seem to be anything else out there.

I’ve walked away from lots of things lately, where I’ve noticed a very strong political bias creeping into things that are not remotely political. You can’t get away from it anymore. The stupidity is absolutely everywhere.
