I’ve been posting a lot lately over on my other blog about the “gimme money” aspect of a lot of hobbyists and it goes beyond just collecting things. It seems like today, people can’t just collect things for the sake of collecting them, they have to do it to make a buck and that bugs me to no end.
It strikes me that much of this comes from the modern Millennial mindset because most of the people that I see pushing this thing in most hobbies, they tend to be very young.
I know I’ve said so before, but when your favorite celebrity kicks the bucket, it doesn’t mean the world is ending. I get really tired of people whining and moaning that “so-and-so is dead!”
I run into this a lot and I have no clue what the hell is wrong with people today. Why do people spend so much of their time online desperately searching for personal validation from complete strangers?
I just finished up making a video where this came up, and therein, I said I wasn’t going to go into it because it was going too far afield. Therefore, I figured before that came out, sometime at the tail end of January, I figure, I’d post my thoughts here on the blog for all to see.
This is incredible common, but here’s yet another example from The Atheist Experience where the hosts just don’t understand what the hell they’re doing wrong. It isn’t just Matt that used to pull this stuff, it’s a lot of them because I think there are people of a particular political persuasion who just can’t figure it out.
I was thinking about this lately and it seems to me, especially when it comes to religion, but that’s not the only place it occurs, that far too many people completely misunderstand how logical syllogisms work. They seem to think that if you can put a three-line argument together, you’ve automatically won the debate.
Sorry, that’s not how it works at all. Therefore, I’m going to give a high-level overview of syllogisms and why so many people are using them completely wrong. Hope it helps. Continue reading Why Do People Misunderstand Philosophy?→
I like Thomas Sowell in general, but even he has some problems, some blind spots that I think are endemic to social and political thinking and need to be pointed out.
Therefore, here I go, as I did in the comments on one of his videos, pointing out that it’s not just the left that have issues. The right is every bit as bad. Continue reading Where I Disagree with Thomas Sowell→
This is a short one, but I came across a video on YouTube and find the answer provided to be ridiculously wrong. It just goes to show how poorly most people, even professional mathematicians, are at critical thinking.
This came up recently in a couple of other posts where I and a philosopher have been having a long, rambling discussion that’s had trouble sticking to a single point. That can be fun on occasion so I don’t mind a bit of meandering but one thing that I’ve noticed, and this isn’t meant to belittle my opponent, but they seem to be reacting in much the same way that I see with a lot of theists. “You just don’t understand!” Yet they seem incapable of just pointing out what I don’t understand, even though I’ve asked on several occasions, but more important than that, they don’t seem to be able to explain, in detail, *WHY* I’m supposedly wrong. Present your evidence and that doesn’t seem to be happening.
It might be because I’ve been talking a lot about philosophy lately, but I’ve been getting into a lot of philosophical discussions, sometimes from a theological bent. Whenever I question the validity of the supernatural or miracles or anything like that, I’m likely to get a claim of “but metaphysics!”
