This showed up on my YouTube channel recently and played out over a couple of days, but now, I’m just over it and see no reason to continue. That doesn’t mean I can’t point out all of the places that the poster went wrong.
So here we go.
I don’t really know where it started, it was on a philosophy video and those tend to bring about strange responses, but he popped up and said something about science being unreliable because you can’t absolutely prove anything is true to any degree of absolute certainty.
So what? Nobody claims that we can! This is where a lot of arguments start to go wrong because they’re based on entirely and bizarrely unrealistic expectations. Absolutely nobody is claiming that science is perfect. It’s just the best methodology that we have at the moment. It’s useful, at least until something demonstrably better comes along.
I honestly have no clue what this guy was even trying to get at because I asked him to provide something superior to science and he couldn’t. All he could say is that science doesn’t work because it doesn’t operate at the level that he wants it to work at, a level that nobody I have ever seen claims that it can work at, and that somehow makes it faulty.
Nope, it’s just a ridiculously unrealistic expectation on the poster’s part. He’s apparently got high standards, higher than anything can conceivably reach, so he’s trying to poke holes in things that don’t reach his standard, even though nobody but him apparently even values that standard.
So what’s the point? It’s like someone saying “I don’t believe in facts” and then saying that any claim to be able to approach facts can’t be true because he doesn’t believe they exist. Whatever. It’s not getting him anywhere demonstrably useful. How does he justify any of this? He doesn’t. He also can’t see what he’s doing is a complete straw man. I suspect he doesn’t care.
That’s why I walked away because it’s like talking to a brick wall. He has no better solutions, in fact, it’s highly unlikely that there could ever be a better solution, he just doesn’t like the solution that exists. Too bad, so sad. Stop wasting my time.
This comes off as yet another individual who spends far too much time noodling their navel and not nearly enough living in the real world. If what you’re proposing has no application whatsoever in reality, what’s the point? Why are you bothering people with this crap at all?
