I watched a couple of videos lately on old TV shows and cartoons from the 30s and 40s mostly, and how some episodes are not readily available today because they offend people’s fee-fees. I find that absurd and pathetic, but I find most people these days, especially young people, to be absurd and pathetic.
Whatever happened to perspective? Whatever happened to not wearing your feelings on your sleeves and just accepting things as they are?
The simple fact is, whether you’re talking about old Disney cartoons or Popeye or the Little Rascals, these shows were not made for you. They were made to appeal to the sensibilities of the people who lived at the time they were made. Get over yourself.
Yet a lot of people don’t seem to be able to do that and I don’t really know when people took complete leave of their senses. I’ve never had a problem understanding the basic dynamics. Sure, I might not agree with everything that is portrayed on screen, but so what? I’m watching a product of an earlier time It doesn’t have to appeal to me 100% of the time!
So why are so many people these days so incapable of doing the same thing? Why can’t they appreciate that it is what it is and you don’t have to buy into every second of on-screen celluloid? I don’t care if you’re talking about Jungle Jitters from 1938 or You’re a Sap, Mr. Jap from 1942, these aren’t intended to change over time, they are what they are and people need to grow up and deal with it! If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. You just have no right to deny it to other people who aren’t as childishly emotionally sensitive as you are. If your panties are in a complete bind all the time, don’t go watching The Little Rascals – The Kid from Borneo (1933).
I’ve never been like that. I’ve always been able to comprehend that every piece of media is inherently a product of its time. I might not agree with the portrayal but the people who lived at the time did. Who are you to think that you get to judge an entire culture of the past in terms of your modern sensibilities?
Oh right, these people are idiots.
Here’s the reality that these people can’t work through their tiny little minds. In another 30 years, people are going to look back at what they’re doing today and cringe. It happens in every generation. What these mental midgets are so impressed with today will be the social faux pas of tomorrow. Some of the stuff that I grew up with is now socially unacceptable, some of the stuff my parents grew up, that was socially unacceptable back when I was young. The cycle never ends.
So why are these people so absurdly stupid? Because they aren’t capable of thinking, they can only feel. All of history has to comply with their modern sensibilities, or else! That’s just not how reality works though and in another 30 years, as I said, they’re going to find themselves on the cutting edge of whatever cancel culture exists in the future.
I’m sure they’ll find some way to rationalize why that’s wrong.
Sorry, there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with acknowledging that everyone hasn’t always been, and will always be, just like you are. The people in WWII had a good reason to depict the Japanese as a racial stereotype. They were under attack! We just think we’re more enlightened today and maybe we are. Maybe the people from the future will look back and wonder how we could have been as primitive as we were, given their perspective?
Of course, none of this is about history. It’s about the modern emotional comfort. It’s people who lack any historical perspective thinking everything is all about them. They’re just wrong. They just don’t care.
Therefore, I’m thinking about ordering the multi-volume restored version of the Little Rascals, completely uncut and unedited, once the final volume comes out later this year. Hopefully they’ll produce a single boxed set. I haven’t even see the Little Rascals in 40+ years, but the last thing I want is anyone telling me that I can’t see something because it hurts their pathetic little feelings. These people really need to grow up and figure out how the world actually works. I’m just sick of listening to these idiots whine.
