The Left Desperately Protecting Islam Against Reality

It’s really sad how far the left will go to make sure that nobody ever blames Islam for violence, ever.  They’re at it again in the midst of a preliminary report that the FBI found no convincing evidence that Orlando shooter Omar Mateen had gay lovers or acted out of some kind of shame for being gay.  That means that we’re back to blaming radical Islam for the massacre that claimed 49 lives.  I mean, it isn’t like Mateen didn’t call 911 while in the midst of the massacre and swear allegiance to ISIS or anything.

Oh wait, he did.

But the left can’t admit that.  They refuse to acknowledge that Islam could have had anything at all to do with it.  Even though the FBI has, at least so far, found no credible evidence that Mateen was gay, the left still insists that he must have been because there’s just no way that Islam could have been responsible.  He must have been ashamed of being gay!

And I have to point out, if he was ashamed, what made him that way?  Could it have been… oh, I don’t know… ISLAM?  Funny that it all keeps coming around to religion, isn’t it?  Either Mateen’s religious hatred for homosexuality came from Islam or his religious revulsion for his own homosexuality came from Islam.  That’s a little hard to get away from.

But the crazies on the left just won’t admit it no matter how blatantly obvious that it is.  They can’t get away from it but they insist on being purposely blind to reality.  They are out and out delusional.  They are so ideologically dead set against blaming Islam for anything that they’ll go to virtually any lengths to avoid admitting the blatantly obvious.

And it’s not just this case, there are still lefty lunatics out there arguing that the San Bernardino shooters couldn’t possibly have been motivated by Islam. Because, you know… reasons.  Or liberal ideology.  Take your pick.  But religion?  Never.  At least not religion often practiced by brown people.  Those people need the left’s protection for some reason.  Because the left is fucking stupid.

Sympathetic Muslims

Please let me know if you’ve come across this but this is a new one on me.  On a religious forum, I came across a couple of people who changed their religious lean to “Muslim”.  These are not people who were previously religious, in fact, several of them were open atheists, but all of a sudden, they are Muslims.  So I asked why and I was told that, because of the perceived hatred that Muslims get in the modern world, that they were changing their lean to show solidarity.  So they’re just being Muslims, not because they actually believe, but out of sympathy for the perceived plight of the Islamic people.

Um… yeah.

Of course, it comes as no surprise that these are also self-proclaimed progressives.  I just wonder how far this kind of thing goes? Are they just doing it on the forum or are they answering other surveys and questionnaires as Muslims as well?  How widespread is this kind of thing?  It’s the first time I’ve knowingly encountered it, but for all I know, it’s been happening all over for a while now.

What about other things?  Could we see straight people “identifying” as gay?  Or transgender?  How about white people “identifying” as black out of sympathy? I mean, we already saw the case of Rachel Dolezal who claimed to be black, even though she wasn’t, and made it up the chain of command of the NAACP.  Where does it end?

This is really why I hate identity politics of all kinds.  People just need to be what they actually are, not what they wish they were.  Their emotional well-being doesn’t change reality.  Hopefully, these crazy non-Muslim pseudo-Muslims won’t go running off to join ISIS or anything, but who can tell?  After all, they don’t have a very good grasp on reality as it is, maybe they’ll decide that their newly-minted Muslimness entitles them to start shooting the “enemy” and strapping on bomb vests and taking out heretics to their cause.  Come on, would any of us really be surprised?

Muhammad Was a Pedophile?

This is something I see from atheists all the time and it drives me crazy.  But this is also a problem with the political left across the board as I’ve pointed out in the past and something that, sorry, just makes you look bad.

The reality is, at the time that Muhammad was around, marrying children was an accepted course of action.  It was something that everyone did.  It was normal for the time.  Regardless of what we might consider Muhammad today if he were to perform these actions in the modern world, he didn’t and it is utterly idiotic to assign modern views on non-modern times.

But isn’t that what happens all the time?  People, especially liberals but I guess all groups are guilty of it to a certain degree, saying that because we think a particular way today, that everyone always thought that way and we should hold everyone to those standards, even if they lived in a time when those standards were different?

I mean, look at slavery.  How many people on the left claim that slavery has always been wrong and will always be wrong because we think that slavery is wrong today?  I mean, look at the South, where liberals are demanding that Civil War leaders be removed from street signs, that their statues be dismantled and that schools named after them be renamed.  Of course, this leads to ridiculous situations where the former Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Austin Texas was voted to be renamed, among other things, “Bleeding Heart Liberal Elementary,” “Politically Correct Elementary School #1,” and my personal favorite, “Adolf Hitler School for Friendship and Tolerance.”  I mean, you people are idiots.  You cannot make the past magically disappear by trying to scrub all references to things you don’t like.  History is history and doesn’t go away, sorry to disappoint you.  What are you going to do when, in 50 or 100 years, people point back at your liberal views and call you a bunch of animals for believing such ridiculous things that don’t match with their “modern values”?

There are lots of perfectly legitimate things that you can point to and criticize Islam for, but saying that Muhammad was a pedophile when, at the time he was living, he wasn’t, is absurd.  It’s shooting for the lowest hanging fruit imaginable. Muhammad isn’t a pedophile.  He’s dead.  He can’t be much of anything because he’s rotted into compost by now.  Muhammad was acting in a perfectly acceptable fashion for the time in which he lived.  We now disagree.  Whatever.  Doesn’t change what was acceptable then, any more than what people think in another 100 years will change what we think today.  Stop going after low hanging fruit because it makes you look like an idiot.  You ought to be better than that.  At least give if a shot.

Should Trump Apologize?

There has been a fair amount of controversy surrounding Donald Trump. but perhaps no more recently than after a Muslim woman was ejected from a rally for wearing a yellow star reminiscent of the stars Nazis made the Jews wear in Germany. She was not disruptive, but she was there to insult Trump and his people threw her out and now, lots of liberals are demanding that Trump issue an apology to her for some unknown reason.

See, here’s the thing.  Political rallies are private events.  They are not public venues.  They are paid for by the candidates and their supporters. Therefore, the candidates have every right to decide who can be there and who cannot.  If someone showed up to a Hillary rally wearing a t-shirt showing Bill Clinton getting a blowjob, I’d expect that person to be removed, whether they were otherwise disruptive or not.  Her rally, her decision.  Trump’s rally, Trump’s decision.  If this lady wanted to make a political statement, she is welcome to do so on public, not private property.  I think this is something that a lot of people misunderstand.  Free speech does not guarantee you a platform to pontificate from.  Private property and private functions can toss you out on your ass for almost any reason they want. Whether you think this particular person deserved to be thrown out is entirely up to you but it still remains the choice of Trump and his people and you have absolutely zero say.  Make up your own mind when you’re paying for a rally, not until.  These rallies, indeed all political rallies, exist for supporters, not for detractors.  This shouldn’t be that hard to understand.

Therefore, I hope Trump doesn’t issue an apology.  The woman is welcome to have whatever views she wants and to support or decry any candidates she wants, but the candidates have no obligation to her as an individual and if she does something she should have known would get her thrown out, as she should have known in this case, then she got what she deserves, just as the Bill blowjob shirt would have done.  Should that person hypothetically get an apology from Hillary for trying to derail her rally? Hell no.  So let’s not play double standards here.

The “Moderate” Side of Islam

A lot of people seem to think that Islam isn’t the cause of a lot of the world’s problems today, but I disagree.  Recently, there was a fight on a local radio show between the host and a Muslim caller who insisted that the overwhelming majority of Muslims are “moderate” and don’t support the extremism that we’re seeing out of groups like ISIS and Boko Haram.  However, in every single worldwide survey that we see, a huge number of these so-called moderates do support exactly that kind of thinking.  The only possible exceptions might come from the western world, with Muslims who were born here and grew up thinking that a secular worldview was the only kind worth following.

The impetus for the discussion was comments made by local politician Loretta Sanchez, who used statistics from the new book by Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz, Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue, where Harris claims that between 5-20% of all Muslims support religious extremism.  Now I have no idea where he gets those numbers and it doesn’t matter, but it does seem to agree with the majority of figures I see.  Muslims get mad that these facts come to light, I get mad because the Muslims aren’t taking responsibility for the things done in the name of their own religion.

So let’s look at the image I’ve included, which comes from a recent Pew Research study.  Exactly where does “extremism” end and “moderate Islam” begin in this image?  If there are 1.62 billion Muslims and the overwhelming majority think that the wife should obey the husband, is that extremism?  How about the 1.1 billion that think that Sharia Law should be the law of the land everywhere?  Extremism or moderate?  What about the 748 million who think that adulterers should be put to death?  Or the 584 million who want death for leaving Islam?  Where are the lines drawn?  What makes a moderate?  And if these things are signs of extremists, then just how many moderates are there actually in Islam?

Not to give any credit to Christianity, but you don’t see those kinds of numbers among Christians.  It is a tiny minority who are vocally for killing gays and bombing abortion clinics.  There are reasons why the Westboro Baptists only have a handful of members.  Hardly anyone takes these ideas seriously except in the most backwoods places and even there it’s a shrinking percentage.  What is it about Islam that makes such a huge percentage of believers cling to such violent and anti-social beliefs? And why don’t the so-called moderates call them out on it?  Where are the overwhelming majority of “peaceful Muslims” when ISIS strikes, except to scream “it wasn’t us!” I don’t care if it wasn’t you, you do bear some responsibility to reign in the crazies in your own religion, what the heck is wrong with you people and why aren’t you doing it?

I don’t think Islam is a moderate religion.  It certainly isn’t a “religion of peace”.  Of course, there’s no such thing as a “religion of peace”.  Just ask the Muslims in Myanmar that are being killed by the supposedly peaceful Buddhists.  All religions are potentially  violent unless held in check by secular society.  Let’s not fool ourselves.  Islam is as much a problem today as Christianity was in the middle ages in Europe and for the exact same reasons.  Until Islam has been neutered by secular society worldwide, we’re going to continue to have problems.  Let’s not pretend otherwise.

Making Excuses for Religion

I always find it absurd how many people out there, religious and atheists alike, will go to extreme lengths to make excuses for religion.  Religion is never the cause of anything.  Religion is never to blame.  Most recently, this has had to do with the San Bernardino terrorist mass shooting as I see people jumping through absurd hoops to excuse the actions of Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, saying that religion couldn’t possibly have had anything at all to do with the massacre.

Bullshit.

Come on, Farook and Malik were both completely radicalized Muslims who had sworn allegiance to ISIS.  Farook was involved in planning an aborted terrorist attack in 2012.  They planned this thing for more than a year, the guns were bought for them more than a year before the attack, they borrowed $28k to help fund the attack and to care for their child once they were gonem this wasn’t some common workplace violence, this was a full-blown terrorist attack, done for religious reasons.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.

But that doesn’t stop the fact that all signs point to religious motivation.  Somehow, these people are allowing their feel-good fantasies to get in the way of reality.  Unfortunately, this is not at all uncommon.  This happens every time religion or religious beliefs do something horrible.  People look for reasons to deflect blame from religion.  It was workplace violence!  They were just insane!  Well yes, they were, but their religion was part of their insanity.  If they weren’t insane, they wouldn’t have held such ridiculous beliefs.

What really surprises me are the number of non-religious people who do this.  I mean, we know that the hyper-left are just apologists for Islam because it’s practiced primarily by brown people, but come on, you people know that Islam is just as idiotic as Christianity, how could you possibly condone such things?  But then again, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find these ridiculous progressives claiming that it’s awful for white people to enslave brown people, but if brown people want to enslave white people, that’s a-okay!  These people disgust me.

It is a fact, like it or not, that ideas can and do influence behavior.  Ideology can change how you act.  Religion is an ideology. Why pretend otherwise?  It is neither harmful or harmless inherently, but when it becomes harmful, as radical Islam has proven to do, then we need to place the blame exactly where it belongs, on this failed and dangerous philosophy.  The same goes for radical Christianity or radical Buddhism or any other religion.  Let’s stop pretending that spades are not spades and just deal with reality as it actually is.

It’s Only Terrorism if it’s Not My Religion!

Got into a shit storm recently with predictable results.  Someone posed the question that if we have Muslim terrorism, that is terrorism that is performed specifically in the name of and motivated by Islamic beliefs, are similar acts performed by Christians, in the name of Christianity and motivated by Christian belief, likewise terrorist.  Now clearly, the answer is yes, there is no logical or rational way around this, but of course, the Christian fanatics came out in force, demanding that Christians can never be terrorists and even if they could, there’s a lot more Islamic terrorism out there today so anything Christians do is entirely irrelevant.

Sure, tell that to the victims of The Army Of God (USA), Eastern Lightning (China) or The Lord’s Resistance Army (Kony’s little group of nutters in Africa), all of whom have been guilty of terroristic acts, if they’re irrelevant.  I would say no.  But because we were “attacking” Christianity and I guess being a bunch of meanies that are making them feel bad, we just have to be wrong.

So there!

But as I pointed out, while lots of acts can be considered terrorist, assigning meaning comes from motivation, not from membership.  Just because someone happens to be a Muslim or a Christian or a Jew and performs a terrorist act doesn’t make them a fill-in-the-blank terrorist.  We have to look at why they do the things that they do.  To do so, I used two common examples.  See, Adolph Hitler was very open and honest that the reason he was doing what he was doing to the Jews was his Christian religious beliefs.  In Mein Kampf, he stated “Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.”  This is certainly not the only passage where he says so, but he lays it out very clearly, he is doing the will of God in wiping out the Jews.  While what he did wasn’t terrorism because it was state-sponsored, it certainly was Christian in nature.  Then you can look at Stalin, who was just as much of a murderous madman as Hitler, but he was also quite clear why he was doing what he did and it had nothing whatsoever to do with his atheism.  It was for political power.  Yet there are a lot of Christians out there who are supremely convinced that he and Pol Pot and other communist dictators acted out of atheism, not out of political expediency.  For Hitler, you have his direct words explaining his motivations.  Christians just don’t like those words so they try to distance themselves from them.  For Stalin, you do as well, but those words don’t support the claims of the religious.  In both cases, the beliefs of the religious are not supported by the reality and honestly, none of them care.

So for some terrorist violence, we know why it’s being done and we can properly assign blame.  When a bunch of guys with machine guns come on shooting people yelling “Allahu Akbar”, it’s pretty obvious what their motivation is.  For things that are not as clear cut, we can only speculate but we can never know for sure.  But to deny that those crazies screaming “Allahu Akbar” are doing things for religious reasons, that’s to deny reality and far too many people are far too willing to do exactly that.

Mohammad on Busses?

muhammad_cartoon_big_fat_bookPamela Geller, the same one who put on the art show in Garland Texas that was shot up by ISIS-backed Muslim terrorists wants to see the artwork from the show gracing public busses and subway stations.  She wants to see depictions of Mohammad shown far and wide as a way of proving to the extremists that they cannot impose their religion on others.  As expected, bus and subway operators are hesitant to do so, it would open their operations to substantial risk and potential lawsuits and the left are out screaming racism and hurling insults at Geller, but I think it isn’t a terrible idea, done carefully.

The whole point of terrorism is to either force behavior or restrict behavior based on a threat of violence.  If we change our behavior specifically because of that threat of violence then in essence, the terrorists have won and I don’t think that’s acceptable.  Also, there is no such thing as sacred in a secular society, so giving the Muslims a pass to harm others because their religious beliefs are insulted while restricting other groups from doing the same is a violation of the most basic tenets of American freedom.  You cannot restrict free speech and you cannot respect violence done in response to free speech.  If you do, you’re no longer living in the United States of America.  The idea that we ought to stop drawing Mohammed because it pisses off the Muslims is as abhorrent as closing all of the abortion clinics because they offend the Christians.  Both the Muslims and the Christians need to grow the hell up and get over themselves.

Yet I think both groups, indeed any group, needs to be shown that it cannot threaten people with violence to get its way either. There is no right whatsoever not to be offended.  If something offends you, either don’t look at it or get over it.  Those are your choices.  Pulling a gun and shooting someone isn’t.  That might fly in the Middle East, it doesn’t fly in an advanced western society.  I think the more we offend these people, the more they have to see what they most despise, the less it will affect them if it’s everywhere.  They’re going to have to be pushed to deal with reality as it is, not as they wish it was.  The same goes for the idiot creationists who hate evolution.  Don’t give in, just keep teaching it.  Show these people they have no control over the real world.

It probably isn’t a good idea to put these pictures in public places where the possibility of widespread bloodshed exists.   I support the right of individuals or privately-held companies doing it though.  Someone has to stand up to these radical Muslim animals.  Apparently, the increasingly liberal citizens of America don’t have the balls.

Obama Lies About Islam Again

obamalies1To be fair, it isn’t only Obama who does this, seemingly the majority of the liberal left operates like this, including a lot of people within the so-called “atheist community”.  This is a complete falsehood and there is no conceivable way that he cannot be aware that he’s vomiting a load of horse shit, but I guess when you lie as much as Obama does, he forgets what it actually feels like to tell the truth.

In an interview with Fareed Zakaria of CNN, he says Lindsay Graham said that he was bothered that Obama won’t admit we’re in a religious war with radical Islam.  He points out that the White House goes to great pains to never use the word “Islamic terrorists” or do anything to refer to the religion at all.  Obama came back with the following statement:

But it is absolutely true that I reject a notion that somehow that creates a religious war because the overwhelming majority of Muslims reject that interpretation of Islam. They don’t even recognize it as being Islam. And I think that for us to be successful in fighting this scourge, it’s very important for us to align ourselves with the 99.9 percent of Muslims who are looking for the same thing we’re looking for. Order, peace, prosperity.

But this is simply not true.  How  do we know this isn’t true?  We just have to ask Muslims what they actually believe!  In a Pew survey of Muslims in Egypt and Pakistan in 2013, they found that 64% of Muslims polled said they supported the death penalty for leaving Islam.  And before you say I’m arbitrarily picking the top numbers, I’m not.  Muslims in Afghanistan top the list at 78% who want infidels killed.  These three countries, Egypt, Pakistan and Afghanistan are nominally allied with the U.S., yet the majority of Muslims there think that leaving Islam, or not being a Muslim in the first place, is a capital offense.  Sure Obama, tell us another one!

But, to be fair, the poll numbers show that people in these countries are also more worried about radical Muslims in their own countries than they are about radical Christians.  Certainly, I can understand that radical Muslims are only too happy to kill other Muslims who fall outside of their extremist sects.  However, I find it worrying that the number of people who fear radical Islam in Egypt, 67%, are almost the same number of people who want to kill non-Muslims, 64%.  I guess extremist has a different meaning depending on what questions you ask.

Yet Obama is saying that it’s only a small percentage of Muslims in certain communities around the world that have “perverted” Islam.  No!  No they have not!  In fact, there’s something that these people are really missing.  It isn’t the radicals who have perverted Islam, it’s the rest of the people who are not taking what the Qur’an says seriously!  It’s the “radicals” who are doing it according to their holy book.  The same goes for radical Christians.  Those are the people actually following their religion, not the people who pick and choose what to believe, based on their personal whims.

I’m not saying I think more people ought to closely follow these primitive religions, I think that everybody ought to grow up and give up on this superstitious nonsense, but to claim the people who barely follow the teachings of their religion are the ones doing it correctly?  That’s absurd!

But what can you expect from Obama and his crew of leftists?  Honesty isn’t something they’re well versed in, spinning reality to fit their agenda is part of the status quo.  The rest of us shouldn’t be at all surprised.

Oslo: Ray of Islamic Hope Dashed

oslo-ring-of-peace
The fantasy…

Every time you think that there’s a ray of hope in the world, it turns out to be wrong.  Not long ago, there was a report out of Norway that more than 1300 Muslims surrounded a Jewish synagogue in Oslo to protest Islamic violence and promote peace between religions.  That’s a great image and certainly one that I entirely support.  Unfortunately, it was all wrong.

Instead of 1300 Muslims, the real number that turned out was about 20.  There was no ring around the synagogue, there was a short line of people holding hands in front of it.  Every single picture of the “event” shows the exact same group of people from different angles.  Why?   Because that’s all there is to show!  Seriously, look for the guy in the grey sweatshirt and the white pants, he’s pictured above third from the right.   He’s in every single picture there is.  A local wrote a report that said: “So innermost the synagogue with 50 or so Jews, then this semicircle of 20 or so muslims, then the barriers and guards and police, then a mostly Norwegian crowd.” He posted an image that showed the reality of this supposed “peace ring”.

Peace Line
… and the reality.

Now don’t  get me wrong, I’d much rather see 20 Muslims supporting peace than none at all, but the media has blown this up to absurd proportions.  The fact is, while there might have been 1300 people at the event, those who were there reported that it wasn’t Muslims, they were almost entirely ethnic Norwegians there for the spectacle.  They were not holding hands, they were standing in a crowd behind the police barricades.  It just isn’t what they are pretending it is.

More than that though, one of the organizers of the event, Ali Chisti, is a known anti-Semite, he gave a speech in 2008 titled “Therefore I Hate Jews and Gays” .  Okay, he could have changed his mind since then and bravo if he has, but that’s probably not the kind of guy you want championing your cause.  It’s like having the KKK Grand Dragon show up at your black history month celebration.

You know, I’m not trying to be down on these people, I’m glad that you have a group of people, regardless of size, who are out trying to have peaceful relations with others.  That’s great.  I just don’t need the agenda, pushed by the media, that this is a massive event so we shouldn’t ever link the words “Muslim” and “terrorist”.  Sorry, there are a lot more Muslims dreaming of shooting at Jews than there are linking hands protecting them.  Let’s stop pretending things that aren’t true, let’s stop lying for agendas.  Let’s just deal with the reality that actually is, this wasn’t a massive event, this was a couple of people who did it for media attention.  It’s great that it happened.  I don’t think it would have happened if the cameras weren’t rolling.

Are Radical Muslims “Hijacking” Islam?

obamareligionNot too long ago, President Obama argued that we are fighting against those who had “hijacked” Islam. It was a solely political move, driven by liberal political correctness, he doesn’t dare say that we are at war with Islamic terrorism, in fact, he refuses to utter those two words together for any reason.  He’s afraid to cost the Democrats any more votes than his regular stupidity already does.  However, whatever his motivations, he’s still completely wrong and I’m going to explain why.

The actual religion of Islam and Christianity start with their books.  That’s the only place that has any information about their gods and religious practices.  For Christianity, that’s the Bible, the only book accepted by all of Christiandom.  For Islam, it would be the Qur’an and Hadith, which are universally accepted by Muslims.  There may be some other texts which are accepted by some theists and not by others, but these books are authoratative for all.

Except they’re not.

Every single sect of Christianity, of which there are more than 41,000 of them, picks and chooses which parts of the Bible they want to believe and which parts they want to quietly ignore.  There are five major sects of Islam, although probably many more in practice, and likewise, they decide what passages of the Qur’an they are going to pay attention to and which ones they’re going to gloss over.  In reality, the overwhelming majority of Christians and Muslims are not Christians or Muslims, they are heretics who have “hijacked” their religions because they aren’t actually following the commands in their books as written.

The only ones who are following the religions are the fanatics, the extremists and radicals who follow the book to the letter and don’t let social norms and cultural taboos get in the way of following their religious beliefs.  The only true Christians or Muslims are the ones that are deemed to be terrorists because they don’t care what anyone thinks of them, they’re following the teachings of their religion regardless.

The idea that “mainstream” religion is bigger or more palatable and therefore somehow more correct is absurd.  “Ownership” of a religion is not determined by how many people believe a thing, but by how closely they adhere to the rules of that religion. The overwhelming majority of Christians and Muslims barely qualify for they pick and choose what to accept and what to reject, even though the books they pretend to revere state specifically that not a single word within the book is to be ignored.

So the next time anyone tells you that ISIS and the Westboro Baptist Church are “hijacking” their religion, point out that IS and the Phelps clan are infinitely more correctly religious than they are.  It isn’t the crazies that are hijacking religion, they are the true believers, it’s everyone else in the mainstream that are hijacking religion and refusing to be held to account for it.

Applying a Rational Standard

keep-calm-and-raise-your-standards-3I actually had a somewhat interesting discussion with a Muslim recently where I questioned him on the validity of beliefs, not his in particular, but of all religious beliefs in general.  He is one of those theists who says they’re not proselytizing, they’re just telling people what they believe, as though that isn’t exactly the same thing.  Clearly, I told him, the reason he’s telling people what he  believes is because he thinks others ought to believe the same thing, otherwise why bother?  What’s the point in engaging people he will never meet in an online forum to discuss the religion he holds if he doesn’t care if they believe it too or not?

That made him stop to think for a while but he came back with the statement that, even if he wished people would take Islam seriously, no one should believe anything he has to say unless they have personally verified all of the things that he and his religion say.  Well then, I had him!  So I asked if he had personally verified the things that his religion claims.  He said yes.  Well then, how had he verified that Allah actually objectively exists?  He had an experience, of course!

But that doesn’t get him out of hot water.  He has no way of verifying that Allah was actually the cause of his experience, it’s just an assertion, made without a shred of objective evidence.  If someone from another religion came to him and made that exact same claim about their god, he wouldn’t see any reason to take it seriously, in fact, he’d pointedly reject the notion without bothering to try to verify the claims.  It goes against his religious beliefs, therefore it has to be false.  That’s not verification, that’s rejection out of hand for irrational reasons.

raising-your-standardsIf he has a standard by which he’s “verified” his own beliefs, how can he refuse to acknowledge that standard for other people going by the exact same standard?  It makes no sense whatsoever.  That makes it an irrational double standard and thus unworthy of intelligent people but the religious use them all the time.  The beliefs that they have an emotional attachment to can be “verified” by having an “experience” for which they can demonstrate no causal link between the experience and their god.  The beliefs that they do not have an emotional attachment to are ridiculous when they seek to do the exact same thing.

Of course, as soon as I pointed this out, he stopped responding, only time will tell if he decides to think on what I’ve said, or if he’s retreated into his religious comfort zone and is pretending that I said nothing worthwhile.  He was on the right track, he ought to be verifying everything, he ought to be applying logic and reason to his beliefs and using that to determine what he ought to believe and what he ought to reject.  Of course, as a theist, he’s not doing that, all he can do is make excuses for why his particular set of beliefs is the exception to the rule when we all know it really isn’t.  We all need to look at the things we believe and ask “is that actually true” and to question our experiences and wonder “is this actually what happened?”  That’s the first step on the road to rationality and why theists simply will never do so.  It’s the fast track to rejecting religion.

Coalition of the Disinterested

Bombing ISILObama has said that the U.S. would lead a vast coalition force against ISIL, but it looks like this supposed coalition is either utterly disinterested in actually doing anything against the Muslim terrorists, or they’ve just been bought off by the U.S. into putting in a minimal effort.  In fact, recently we performed some joint bombing operations with several Middle East nations who are our “allies”, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, but really, just how committed are these countries and how much do they really want to work hard to stop ISIL?  The answer is, not very much.  Qatar, for example, sent just two planes for the bombing runs.  Okay, granted, the entire Qatar air force is reportedly made up of 12 French Mirage fighters, they don’t have that much to give but it seems like a token effort and I’m sure that it was bought and paid for entirely by the U.S. government.

The problem is, nobody really wants to take part in this supposed coalition, especially those countries most likely to be directly impacted by ISIL’s actions. They know, as we all should, that military action is not going to stop ISIL and when they get overrun by the Muslim extremists, they at least want some plausible deniability that they didn’t act against their new religious overlords.  In fact, the overwhelming majority of countries that are supposedly part of the 40-member coalition are doing virtually nothing to actually help in the bombing.  Only a very few have committed even a single plane to the fight.  France, traditionally cheese-eating surrender monkeys, at least put in a couple of bombing runs before they ran away from the threat of Islamic violence.  I suppose that’s more than can be said for most and I have to give them some credit for it.

The real problem is, this is not a war that can be won, or at the very least, we’re not willing to do what it will take to actually win it.  I blame this on our utterly failed Middle East foreign policy for the past 60 years, where we’ve stuck our nose into the business of a people who want nothing from us but our absence and we’re unwilling to do that because they have oil and we have a massive ego.  Years ago, I might have said that pulling out of the region and allowing them to determine their own fate might have bought us some good will and perhaps done something to heal the rifts that have formed over the decades, but today, I don’t think that’s a workable solution anymore.

We have been personally responsible for raising several generations of utter fanatical Muslims who hate us because we’ve meddled in their affairs and now, just want to see us dead.  This isn’t a political hatred, it’s a religious one, now totally ingrained into their culture.  They have fighters who are ready and willing to die in order to fight the U.S. and are only too happy to engage in tactics that the rest of the world sees as barbaric to achieve their goals.  These are people who cannot be reasoned with.  These are people who cannot be negotiated with.  These are people who have to be killed, but we simply do not have the balls to do what needs to be done and any politician that even suggested that we carry through on that plan would find themselves on the streets in record time.  The western world simply doesn’t have the guts to make the difficult decisions to fix this problem.

What needs to be done?  In all honesty, I think we’re at the point of mass killing of all Muslim extremists.  That’s a hard thing to say and it will almost certainly backfire on us because it will just generate more extremists from the pool of available Middle Eastern Muslims.  This is, at least potentially, a class of enemy that we’ve never faced.  Even the Nazis gave up against forces of overwhelming superiority.  I’ve heard reports of Muslim extremists going up against impossible odds, willing to die horrible deaths to get their 72 virgins.  These are fanatics.

So what do we do?  I don’t know that there is anything we can do.  Sure, there are things that need to be done but America lacks the will to actually do them.  We want to fly our planes and drop our bombs and somehow believe that American ingenuity will win the day and it just won’t happen against religious fanatics.  They’re willing to die if they can take some of us with them.  They’re willing to kill civilians, just because they don’t believe in the same imaginary friend in the sky.  They know no borders, they know no compromise and they’re not going to stop until someone puts a stop to them permanently.

And we don’t have the balls to do it.  We’re screwed.

Christians Aren’t Better Than Muslims

CrusaderI’ve seen a lot of statements by self-professed Christians that Christianity is inherently better and “more civilized” than Islam and that Christianity would never do any of the things that extremist Islam is doing today.

Don’t you believe it.

Christianity has had a long and very bloody history where murdering the unbeliever and stealing their stuff is standard operating procedure.  Look at the Crusades.  Look at the Inquisitions.  Look at the witch trials.  Christian history is filled with violence.  Even today, we see plenty of Christian terrorism in the U.S.  Bombing abortion clinics and killing doctors, like the murder of Dr. George Tiller in 2009, was committed not by a Muslim, but by a fundamentalist Christian.  In fact, the Army of God has a long history of murder and terrorism, all based around Christian beliefs.  Of course, the whole Christian Identity movement is racist and violent across the board. Anyone who thinks the Bible isn’t filled to the brim with violence has never read the Bible.

The one thing they forget is that Christianity has had the moderating influence of secular society for several hundred years, something that Islam has not had the benefit of.  Before secular society told Christianity to grow up and knock it off, they were doing the exact same thing that ISIL is doing right now.  They just didn’t have access to modern weapons like ISIL does.  This might make ISIL more dangerous, but not more evil than Christianity.  Swords and arrows do considerable damage too when employed against the unbelievers.

I think it’s clear that, at least for the most strident believers, if Christianity had half a chance, they’d go right back to their violent and extremist ways.  You only have to listen to the most ardent Christians out there, the ones who want to impose “Christian values” on everyone, by force, and execute or otherwise harm the heretics, to know this is the case.  It was George Bush that said that atheists can’t be considered citizens that betrays their ultimate view on the situation, even if secular society won’t allow them to act on it.

Add to the fact that, in a recent discussion on public schools and religion, I had numerous evangelical Christians saying they wanted religion in schools, but only their particular brand of Christianity.  All other religions had to be outlawed, but theirs had to be mandated.  The idea that Christianity wouldn’t become extremist, exclusionary and violent in very short order if secular society went away is laughable indeed.

Religion is evil, no matter how you slice it.  Some religion, we’ve managed to neuter and keep under control, although that desire to run wild and kill the unbeliever lurks just below the surface.  Theists may deny it and, in fact, many theists may be completely safe, their violent impulses subsumed beneath secular society and teaching, but there are still plenty who would, in a moment, go out and kill the gays, murder the atheists and bomb the infidels if they could.  It’s part of theology, no matter how hard some people try to deny it.

So get off your damn high horse, Christians.  You’re no better than the Muslims.  You’re all a bunch of irrational yahoos.

Are Theists Stupid?

not-sure-if-stupid-or-just-christianOn a recent Atheist Experience, they talked briefly about their disagreement with calling the religious stupid, saying that the religious can be just as smart as non-theists.  Well, yes and no.  Certainly, with regard to their theism, theists are not as smart as non-theists because they believe in irrational things. They can be bright outside of their religious beliefs, they can be geniuses in fact, but when it comes to the things they believe about gods and the supernatural, they are, without exception, downright dumb.

That’s because their beliefs are irrational and there’s no denying it.  They believe things, on faith, for which they have no good objective evidence are actually so.  They are delusional.  They have an overactive fantasy life.   They ought to be embarrassed by it, just like an adult who still believes in Santa Claus ought to be embarrassed by it, they’re just not.  That’s an even more clear reflection on their intelligence in the religious realm.

I know I’ve said this before, but some people seem to have a significant problem making differentiations between sub-sets of data.  They assume that if a person is “smart”, that means they are smart in all things and if a person is “stupid”, that must mean they are stupid in all things.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  We are all smarter in some areas than we are in others, we are all dumber in some areas than we are in others and apparently, if these differentiations are not spelled out directly, some people are unable to understand that simple fact.  There are plenty of things that I am downright ignorant of.  That doesn’t make me a completely ignorant person.  One of my primary examples of this is Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institute of Health and former head of the Human Genome Project.  He’s a genius when it comes to his scientific work.  He’s also a evangelical Christian.  He’s very smart in one area, very, very dumb in another.  I don’t know how we can call it anything else but what it is.

Many rational atheists were once religious.  We were, by any reasonable definition, stupid.  We didn’t understand the reality, we didn’t have the tools to evaluate the facts or think critically about the situation.  Then we learned.  We stopped being stupid, foolish and gullible.  We started acting as rational beings, at least with regards to religion.  Religious stupidity isn’t necessarily permanent, it can be changed, just by adding a dose of evidence and mixing with the spoon of rationality.  It happens every day, more and more often as the public becomes better educated and science shows us that religious bunk is wholly unnecessary to living a worthwhile life.

So yes, I’m going to continue to call Christians and Muslims and Buddhists and all of the rest of the religious looney-tunes stupid.  It’s not because I want them to feel bad, they ought to feel bad enough because they believe this crap in the first place.  It’s because I want them to step back and take a look at what they believe and realize just how stupid it actually is.  I know that the majority aren’t capable of that, but for those that do, that need a metaphorical boot to the head to get some intelligent thought going, it works.  I’m not going to pretend to respect these people and their crazy beliefs, these are things that they should be ashamed of, they should want to change and until they do take steps to change them, they deserve to be thought of as idiots, at least within the religious realm.  They need to lift themselves out of the morass of religious insanity and join the rational human race.

Then, and only then, will they stop being religiously stupid.

This week, we have a theme show, all stories about the religious double standards and whining about being under attack.  Bill Donohue thinks Obama hates Christians, 30 countries specify which religion their leaders must belong to, Tucker Carlson says that asking the IRS to enforce its rules is an attack on Christianity and 8 states where you cannot be elected if you’re an atheist. Plus, we spend quite a bit of time talking about the increasing radicalization of religion as moderate and liberal theists continue to flood away from religion. Stick around, this is going to be fun.

As with last week, please post comments on the podcast over on our official website!

The Real Question for Muslims

Muslim RadicalI ran into this video over on a Google+ Atheism community and really think everyone is looking at it the wrong way. I think I have the question that nobody is asking, but that ought to be the real focus here.  In the video, which was a panel on Benghazi and the United States responsibility for it, an American Muslim stood up and said that there were many, many more peaceful, non-radical Muslims out there, but that everyone focuses on just the 15-20% of Muslims that are violent fanatics.  Now while I’ll say that 15-20% of any group is a sizeable percentage and one to be very concerned about, I will agree that it is a minority and we ought to be careful not to generalize and assume that all Muslims are secret jihadists, getting ready to murder you in your sleep.  That’s certainly not true and we need to treat decent people, regardless of their beliefs, like decent people.

The reality is, we cannot blame all Muslims for the misdeeds of a lesser percentage of them, any more than people should blame me for the stupidity of Atheism+ and the liberal feminist non-theists.  It’s not my fault, I have nothing to do with their idiocy, but there’s a difference between me and most non-violent Muslims.

I speak out.  I let the world know of my vehement disagreement with the crazy atheists of the world.  I don’t just sit meekly by and let them roll over me with their absurd nonsense, I’m on top of my own personal soapbox pointing out just how ridiculous these people actually are and I’m encouraging other people who feel the same way to do the same.  Muslims, apparently, aren’t like that.  How do you explain that most of the Middle East is run by the radicals, when the radicals are in the minority?  Where is this majority of peaceful, loving, caring, non-radical Muslims to moderate the crazies?

If these peaceful Muslims are really outraged, what are they doing about it?  Are they taking on their crazy brethren, taking to the streets, taking over the governments, shouting down the radical Imams?  Or are they standing up in a panel in America and insisting that people not lump them in with the crazies that the majority of peaceful, non-radical Muslims have totally failed to reign in?  Where are the huge groups of non-radical Muslims marching on Tehran?  Or Baghdad?  Or Riyadh?  Heck, where are the groups of non-radical Muslims marching in London, against the jihadists who insist that Sharia Law be established?  Still too dangerous?  There are more than 2.5 million Muslims in America.  Where are the massive public protests against radical Islam?  Anyone?  The only one that even tried was the laughable Million Muslim March and that was a move toward increased radicalism!

So if you guys aren’t willing to step up and clean up your own house, how can you complain that you’re being lumped in with the radicals?  Pick a side.  Do something.  Stop thinking you can share the religion but not share the blame.  If you’re not willing to collectively speak out against radical Islam, screw you.  I’d be happy to see a big concerted online effort to speak out against it, but you don’t even see that.  Why should I respect Muslims at all if they haven’t earned it?  So long as you’re not willing to be part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Here we go again!  This week, Fox News falls for a 4Chan hoax, or do they?  Egypt outlaws unlicensed Imams and we wonder where you get an Imam license?  Christian persecution, a new study shows it’s nonsense but the Christians probably don’t care.  Pat Robertson encourages children not to involve the authorities in domestic abuse.  Plus, we have a long discussion on where religious debates go wrong and why apologetics fail but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Give it a listen!

The Bitchspot Report Podcast #66

Bitchspot Report New IconIt’s an all-news show!  This week, Christians think they’re going to the gas chambers, the Supreme Court settles the case over the Murfreesboro mosque, atheists are actually blinded to the fact that they’re possessed by demons, Southern Baptists post huge losses once again, the couple who killed two cops and a woman in Vegas were actually religious conspiracy nuts and what do you call 800 dead babies in a septic tank?  Another typical Catholic tragedy!  Strap in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

What is Muslim Oppression?

Oppression

There are a lot of really awful things that happen under the umbrella of Islam, people getting raped, stoned, having their hands chopped off, etc.  There is a lot of oppression that can occur in the Muslim world and in the west, a lot of feminists have seized on the idea of wearing traditional Muslim garb, be it burkas or hajibs or whatever, is a symbol of the inherent oppression of women by men within the Muslim religion.

However, I saw a bunch of pictures of Muslim women go by on Tumblr where they were holding signs saying they are not oppressed, they are wearing these things by choice and I think that’s something that  a lot of western feminists really miss when they claim it’s all oppressive.  It’s that these women choose, of their own free will, to go by the standards and beliefs of Islam.  They choose to do the things they do.  A link to the Tumblr posting that I saw, where this and many other similar pictures reside, is here.

And isn’t it their right to make their own decisions about how they dress and how they act?  Isn’t freedom supposed to be one of the things that western culture values above all else?  After all, we have no evidence that Muslim men are holding women at gun point and forcing them to put on these clothes against their will.  The women believe in Islam just as strongly as the men.

In fact, what a lot of western feminists are doing is demanding the “right” for Muslim women to behave like western women.  Well guess what?  they’re not western women!  What western feminists want is for non-western women to reject their own culture and beliefs out of hand so that the western feminists feel better about western culture.  It isn’t so much that they dislike how these women are treated, it’s that these women haven’t jumped on the western culture bandwagon and started acting like western feminists.

Now I have no love for Islam, I think it’s as idiotic as every other religion, but the people who practice it have the same right to do so as people in the west have not to.  If they want to dress in a burka, so be it.  It’s not my place to tell them they cannot.  You are not being inherently oppressed by a religion that you choose to practice, just because it goes against what other people believe.  According to a lot of Muslim women that I’ve seen, what happens to women in the western world is oppression too.  It’s all a matter of opinion.  And that’s the thing, opinions are like assholes, everyone has them and, at least according to the people who disagree, they all stink. Maybe instead of criticizing someone’s choices because they’re not what you might have chosen, maybe you should worry about people who are actually being forced to do things against their will.  That’s oppression.  Not wearing a particular piece of clothing.
