Picking on ChristianMingle?

In a recent court case, a judge ordered the owners of ChristianMingle, a “Christian” dating service, to allow same-sex couples to use the service, even though homosexuality is a sin according to a lot of Christians.  Of course, this immediately caused Christian whiners to come out of the woodwork, screaming that this is blatant discrimination against the owners of ChristianMingle.

The problem is, the company that runs ChristianMingle and a lot of these other targeting dating websites, Spark Networks Inc., is not a religious organization.  They’re just a business that has no specific religious affiliation of its own.  It’s just playing a role and catering to specific demographics.  Therefore, because they are not a religious organization, they are just as obligated to follow non-discrimination laws as everyone else.

I don’t think a lot of Christians understand that ChristianMingle isn’t a Christian site.  They think it’s got to be run by a church somewhere but it simply isn’t, nor has it ever been.  The owners of Christian Mingle also own other dating sites like CatholicMingle, AdventistSinglesConnection and BlackSingles.  It isn’t like they can claim to have closely held religious beliefs that cover Christianity, Catholicism, Seventh Day Adventism, oh, and being black too.

And this is really where these groups have a problem.  I can understand that particular kinds of people may want to date the same kind of people, but that doesn’t mean they get to discriminate against other kinds of people. That just means that you have to do your due diligence and decide if the person on the screen meets your personal criteria or not.  The business that is bringing you this service simply is not allowed to discriminate on the basis of strict scrutiny categories whether you like it or not.  If you really want to discriminate, go to your church, they’re allowed because they are a non-profit registered religious organization.  ChristianMingle is not.

You’d think that after all of the bakeries getting fined for being discriminatory, someone would have figured this out by now. Unfortunately, the religious zealots and bigots are pretty slow to realize that they no longer run the show.  And that’s a good thing for them to figure out.
