Horror Show Sunday: Religious Freedom

As long as we’re talking about abuse done in the name of religion, we might as well cover this story about a woman in Indiana who beat her 7-year old son with a coat hanger, then tried to justify the whole thing by proclaiming she has “religious freedom”.  Yes, some people are that stupid.

Kin Park Thaing, 30, argued in court that she beat her 7-year old son with a coat hanger in accordance with her Christian religious values and therefore, no one has any right to hold her accountable for her actions.  She specifically quoted Proverbs 23:13, which states, “Do not withhold discipline from a child: if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.”

When she was arrested, she said “I was worried for my son’s salvation with God after he dies, I decided to punish my son to prevent him from hurting my daughter and to help him learn how to behave as God would want him to.”  Because these were her deeply held beliefs, she asked that the case be dismissed under the newly passed Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, but was luckily denied.  At least some people have half a brain in their heads.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry has been expecting the religious to try exactly this.  “We predicted this was exactly was going to happen, is individuals would assert their religious freedom to justify what is clearly criminal conduct.”  Even though Thaing is a refugee from Myanmar, that isn’t an excuse for physical violence against a child in the name of religion.  But I expect this kind of thing to continue because the highly religious are more concerned with their religious beliefs than they are with their civic responsibilities.  That’s why cases like this will continue to show up on Horror Show Sunday, because the religious are animals and far too many people are happy to allow them to be animals because offending someone’s ridiculous religious beliefs is simply not acceptable.

I beg to differ.

Horror Show Sunday: Those That Talk the Loudest…

Why are the religious such assholes?  Because that seems to be a trend that I’ve noticed and I’m certainly not alone. It’s funny how so many of the hyper-religious who scream about the evils of homosexuality wind up in a bathroom somewhere with some guy’s dick in their mouth.  Well, as should be no surprise, here we go again.

Pastor Ken Adkins, a Georgia church leader who was very vocal in criticizing the patronage of the Pulse night club where 49 clubgoers died and 53 others were wounded in an attack by Omar Mateen, turns out to have been a child molester.  “I don’t see none of them as victims,” Adkins tweeted. “I see them as getting what they deserve!”  I wonder if he thinks the boy he molested got what he deserved too?

In fact, Adkins had molested both a boy and a girl at multiple locations back in 2010.  He was convicted of 8 counts of child molestation and never showed a moment’s remorse.  The boy, now 22 and a specialist in the Army, claims that Adkins, who had legal control over his financial affairs, stole all of his money at the time of the incident.  The girl denies that anything illegal happened, which has led experts to find her legally incompetent.  “She’s in his clutches,” said Katie Gropper, the assistant district attorney who tried the case.  “What he has done to that girl is not only criminal, it is deplorable.”

Of course, this kind of thing isn’t at all uncommon, where the abused will deny abuse because they are afraid to impugn the good name of their pastor.  It’s one of my biggest problems with the totally uncalled for respect that is automatically given to the clergy, that people can be taken advantage of and still deny it because they’re terrified that their pastor has an “in” with some imaginary man in the sky.  But watching how religion harms the innocent is a common theme on Horror Show Sunday, isn’t it?  Religion harms no one?  That’s simply and demonstrably untrue.

Horror Show Sunday: No Exit

Word of Life Christian Church Pastor Tiffanie Irwin has plead guilty to manslaughter at her church where two brothers were beaten for hours during a religious counseling session.  Her brother Joseph as well as Linda and David Morey, a mother and son, all plead guilty to aggravated assault.

The beatings which were perpetrated on brothers which lead to the death of Lucas Leonard, 19, and injured Christopher Leonard, 17.  They took place when the brothers tried to leave the congregation.  This started an all-night beating during which the brothers were beaten on their torsos and genitals with a cord.  The surviving brother says they were accused of a variety of religious crimes, including having a voodoo doll.

Even the brothers’ parents got into the act and plead guilty to assault. Several other congregation members were likewise found guilty of similar crimes.  The boys were found bound in the converted New Hartford school that currently housed the church.

And they say religion doesn’t hurt anyone.

Unfortunately, stories like this are not at all uncommon, Horror Show Sunday is chock full of them, where the religious, instead of allowing people to walk away from their churches, they engage in deadly violence and probably aren’t even sorry when they get caught.  Does Tiffanie Irwin look guilty in the photo above? I sure don’t think so.

But that’s what happens when you’re more emotional than you are rational.  When you’re only concerned with what you feel and not at all with whether or not your beliefs are true.  It’s why people die so often at the hands of the clergy and their congregations.  Because trying to walk away from the crazy beliefs of fanatics cannot be tolerated and people who try must be stopped at all costs, even if it costs them their lives.  This is what religion does to people.  Who can dare deny it?

Horror Show Sunday: Gay Death Penalty

Haven’t done any Jewish horrors for a while, although there is certainly no shortage of them.  So here goes.  In Israel, the Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar told a newspaper that homosexuality was a “cult of abomination” which the Torah punishes “with death”.  Now you’d expect that coming from the Muslims, but from the Jews?  Say no way!

But of course it does because this primitive religion is every bit as bloodthirsty and violent as all of the other primitive religions.  That’s what happens when you take these ancient books of bronze age mythology seriously.

It isn’t like this guy hasn’t been caught spreading the same kind of anti-gay sentiment before.  Last year he claimed that most people were “disgusted” by homosexuality and called Jerusalem’s annual gay pride parade “an embarrassing phenomenon”.

Not surprisingly, plenty of people were upset by Amar’s words, demanding he be fired from his position as official chief rabbi.  Pro-gay activists have been the most vocal, saying “This is not an anti-religious issue… I do have an interest to protect my rights and your rights to live, and [to live with] dignity,” according to Shirley Kleinman, who accuses Amar of incitement to violence.

Now sure, it does say that in the Torah but it’s one thing to note what exists in an ancient book of mythology and another to suggest that it has any bearing whatsoever today.  But the religious aren’t politically correct, any more than they’re factually correct.  They follow along with this absurd bronze age nonsense whether it’s currently acceptable or not.  And this guy, as an official of the Israeli state, ought to know better.  But when your religion gets undue official political support, you don’t have to care about anyone outside of your faith.  Kind of sad, isn’t it?

The more people take this ancient horse excrement seriously, the more likely it is that someone might act on it, as happened in 2015 when an Orthodox Jew murdered a participant at the Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade, following the Torah’s prescriptions against homosexuality.  I reported on it on Horror Show Sunday a while back.  Would I be surprised if the same thing happened again?  Not as long as the religious leadership keeps pushing this kind of ridiculous hate-mongering out into the modern world.

Horror Show Sunday: Don’t Steal Cows Either

As long as I’m talking about irrational Hindus, I might as well get it out of my system.  In northern India, a mob of those fun-loving Hindus have murdered yet another Muslim because they thought he stole a cow.

Mohammad Hasmat Ali was found dead, beaten to death in the remote village of Uchekon Moiba Thongkhong in Manipur. The victim lived in the neighboring village of Keirao Makting where he worked at a Muslim madrassa.  While Ali had no clear connection to the crime, he was the fourth victim of Hindu violence against Muslims in six weeks.

“What is happening here is completely wrong — people taking the law into their hands. We face the problem of mob justice in this area, and we are trying to do our best to contain it.” said Naba Kanta, the senior police official. Violence against non-Hindus is on the increase because the government of India allows cattle slaughter and consumption.  Some Hindus within the government have been pushing for bans on cattle killing nationwide.

There are even Hindu vigilante groups that are violently attacking those suspected of eating beef.  A Hindu mob in the Kashmir Valley in northern India threw a firebomb into a truck that was suspected of carrying beef.  The driver suffered horrific burns and died a few days later.  Just days later, another Muslim man was murdered by a mob in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh when he was suspected of smuggling cattle for consumption.

This is what happens when crazy people hold irrational beliefs that cannot be justified in reality.  Fanatics in any numbers who think their religious beliefs are more important than the people around them invariably lead to violence and death. Just looking through Horror Show Sunday proves that beyond any doubt.  It doesn’t matter what religion you’re talking about, it matters only that these people believe absurd things.  And they say religion doesn’t cause any harm.  I call bullshit.

Horror Show Sunday: Don’t Kill Cows

Usually, when we talk about religious violence, we’re talking about Muslims, or somewhat less commonly, Christians.  But pretty much any religion can turn violent when their most cherished beliefs, no matter how irrational, get  challenged.

Take this case in India, where a mob of Hindus in the village of Bisara, near Delhi, murdered a Muslim blacksmith and beat his son badly, following reports that a cow was killed in a nearby neighborhood.

Mohammad Akhlaq, a local blacksmith, was beaten to death by the Hindu mob and his son, Danish was beaten and hospitalized with critical injuries.

Local Hindu priest Sukhdas Mahatma said, “Two young men came to me that night and asked me to announce on the loudspeaker that there’s a carcass of a cow lying nearby. They pressured me to make that announcement. What could I do? I had to make that announcement.”  A crowd of Hindus gathered near the temple and reasoned that the blacksmith must be responsible because his religion doesn’t prohibit eating beef.  Apparently, there was no evidence whatsoever linking him to the death of the cow.

Mother of Mohammad Akhlaq, Asghari Begum said, “”I heard loud bangs on the front door of our house. Then I heard them shouting expletives.”  This was just before the mob climbed the wall surrounding her house and attacked.  “They pushed me, then punched me on my face, in the abdomen,” she said. “It was blood all over my son’s face. He is gone.”

The mob dragged her son and grandson out into the street and were beating them with “whatever they (attackers) could lay their hands on,” said police superintendent Kiran Sivakumar.  This is what happens when the religiously irrational decide to take justice into their own hands.

It’s not that uncommon unfortunately.  I’ve done several stories on Horror Show Sunday that detail Hindu violence against non-Hindus for entirely irrational reasons.  But this is religion we’re talking about.  It has nothing to do with reality, it has to do with following ridiculous beliefs that have no place in factual reality, for the sake of emotion, not intellect.  So long as these religions remain, violence will always follow close behind.  It’s just what religion does.

Horror Show Sunday: Waiting Until After the Service

I guess it’s a good thing he waited?  In Zimbabwe, an Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) pastor has been arrested and charged with rape after he offered to take a 16 year old congregant home following a church service.  Isheanusu Muposhi, 27, said he would take the unnamed minor girl home following a service in Bulawayo’s Emakhandeni suburb, during which he’s reported to have pounced on the girl and raped her.  Congregants report having seen him with the girl before the assault.  Can anyone say they are surprised?

Well you’d better not because this is not at all uncommon among AFM pastors in Zimbabwe.  A couple of years before, another pastor, Oliver Makomo, was charged with raping one of his congregants as well.  He was 49 when he started pursing a 22 year old woman.  He had first visited her at her work where he obtained her phone number and over time, asked her if she was a virgin.  He invited her to his office at the church where he locked the door and proceeded to molest her.  She was told not to tell anyone and, at least at the time, she complied.  However, the abuse didn’t end there, it went on for several years, during which the pastor’s position in the church afforded him repeated occasions to force himself on his victim and she never came forward fearing filing a complaint against a respected pastor.  It wasn’t until 2015 when the victim admitted what had happened to her boyfriend and the pastor was brought to justice.

This is exactly why the level of respect and admiration often given to the clergy is so problematic.  How many stories have we seen where someone is sexually abused and told they can’t tell anyone because their rapist is a respected member of the community and the church?  When you pretend to be the mouthpiece of God, you wield a lot of undeserved power and unfortunately, as we see in far too many of these cases, get away with pretty much anything you want.  That’s why I give them so much attention on Horror Show Sunday, because this abuse of power and influence is absurdly commonplace.  You shouldn’t trust your pastor and you certainly shouldn’t fear the repercussions of reporting them to the police.  I wonder just how many get away with their crimes because the victims are afraid of being punished in the hereafter.  It’s just sad.

Horror Show Sunday: Orgies in the Rectory

We might as well finish out the year with some good old fashioned Catholic sex scandal, this time in Italy.  Catholic priest Father Andrea Contin, a priest in the northern city of Padua in Veneto, is being investigated by the police under suspicion for living off immoral earnings and psychological violence.

Contin’s church was found to contain numerous sex toys and videos showing sex orgies taking place on San Lazzaro church premises.  It was searched after three female parishioners complained.  Also found in Contin’s personal quarters were videos of explicit pornography, each bearing the name of former popes.  At least he has a sense of humor.

Complaints about Contin’s antics were reported to the local bishop, but as should be a surprise to no one, the church did nothing, saying they were investigating on their own.  The Catholic Church is well known for covering up problems within their ranks and I doubt that this would ever have made it to authorities.  One woman who complained, a 49-year old volunteer, said she and Contin had sex in the rectory and didn’t understand why he always had so many women hanging around him.  Others have claimed that Contin arranged sex parties and farmed former lovers out in partner swaps.

But honestly, what can you expect from the Catholic Church, an organization that has, at last count, spent more than $5 billion dollars paying off victims of priestly sexual abuse.  They haven’t even admitted they have a problem and the cases don’t seem to be slowing down and certainly not stopping.  But when you’ve got priests holding out-and-out orgies in their rectories, something tells me that they have bigger problems than we probably realize.  And that’s why Horror Show Sunday will continue. There’s no end in sight of terrible stories that could not have happened without religion.  This one for instance couldn’t have become the massive international story that it did without the Catholic Church trying to bury it.  It couldn’t happen if people didn’t put such trust in their religious beliefs and in the religious institutions that push it.  And that’s why the Religious Horror Show will never go away, because so long as religion gets special privileges and virtually no close examination, it will be an abuse magnet that we’ve all come to detest.  Religion is mind poison.  Expect another year of the same.

Have a Merry Secular Christmas

It’s that time of year again, where the annual War on Christmas rages on in the minds of the far right and the rest of us really couldn’t care less.  We’re too busy celebrating Christmas or whatever winter holiday happens to float your boat.

Personally, I couldn’t care less.

The reality is, whether the ridiculously religious like it or not, Christmas hasn’t been a religious holiday in a very long time.  Sure, there are some people who insert religious symbolism into their otherwise secular holiday, people who might show up for a church service along the way, but the vast majority of things that are done today, at least in the west, are wholly secular and have nothing at all to do with Christianity.

Take the Christmas tree, which comes from pagan mythology and was even outlawed in some states in the early United States for being heretical.  Gifts… all of them come not from Christianity but from consumerism.  Santa Claus?  While ostensibly he started out being a Catholic saint, the Santa we all think about today came from a 1930s Coca Cola ad campaign.  The same goes for Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and the Grinch, none of which are religious in nature at all.

And then there are things that supposedly started out with religious significance and have grown secular over the years.  Candy canes, for instance, supposedly came from a 1670 choir master who wanted to keep children quiet during the long Christmas nativity service so he made candy in the shape of a shepherd’s crook to shut them up.  Today?  Doesn’t mean a damn thing.

The First Christmas Card – 1843

Christmas cards started in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole who helped to set up the Post Office in 1840 and wanted to encourage more regular people to use it.  The first cards cost a shilling and had three panels, the outer panels showing people helping the poor and the center one showing a family having a feast.  Some people complained because it showed a child being given wine.  So Christmas cards were a marketing campaign for the mail system.  Not religious at all.

Mistletoe goes back to the Druids and it is from the Norse that we get the idea of kissing under the mistletoe. Early Christians in Europe tried to ban it as heretical. In fact, mistletoe is a parasite, spread by bird droppings. Even though it is widely used around the holidays, mistletoe is toxic to humans and can kill you if consumed in large enough quantities.

So remember that there is no war on Christmas, there’s just a return to the Christmas that we’ve had for a lot longer than Christianity has been around.  Just enjoy your day, see your family and friends and have a good time.  Don’t worry about kissing the ass of some imaginary sky daddy and his bastard son.  It’s all laughable anyhow.  You ought to be better than that.

Horror Show Sunday: Selling Babies

As long as we’re talking about religious child abuse, let’s take a look at this story, where a pastor in Lagos, Africa, has been arrested for selling more than 64 babies out of his church.

Peace Udoh, pastor of the Divine Yard Deliverance Ministry in Iyana Iyesi, Ota, Ogun State, was arrested for running a baby factory out of her church.  The 47-year old Udoh was arrested, along with Angela Akpan and a nurse, Mrs. Bukola Ajala, who reportedly assisted in childbirth at Udoh’s church.  Young pregnant girls are convinced to give up their babies to the church, which then locates and sells them to prospective parents.

Of course, they don’t tell them what they’re doing.  17-year-old Goodnews Akpan, sister of one of those arrested in the scam, said she was not told that they were going to sell her baby.  As should be no surprise, Udoh denies the allegations, saying “Whenever I have a complicated case, I refer the patient to the nurse and we share the money she collects for the service. Angela brought her sister to me in July. She gave birth on November 16 at the nurse’s clinic and she was discharged. I was surprised when the police came to arrest me yesterday.”

Surprised?  How so?  This kind of thing is blatantly illegal and absurdly immoral pretty much everywhere on the planet. How the religious can pretend to be morally upstanding and still pull anything like this is beyond me.  Certainly thought, it’s no surprise for Horror Show Sunday, where the most religious people do the most outrageous, immoral and unbelievable things and they’re usually completely baffled why anyone has a problem with it.  Well duh!  You are selling human beings for money in the guise of religion!  It can’t be that hard to understand and for most of us, it isn’t.  Only for the clueless and gullible and totally deluded.  That describes the religious.

This is Your Brain on God

If you ever wondered what religion causes in the brain, here you go, this is an fMRI scan of a religious believer having a so-called “religious experience”.  And you know what it looks amazingly like?  Someone on drugs.

“We’re just beginning to understand how the brain participates in experiences that believers interpret as spiritual, divine or transcendent,” says neuroradiologist Jeff Anderson. “In the last few years, brain imaging technologies have matured in ways that are letting us approach questions that have been around for millennia.”

Religion activates the brain’s reward centers, just like drug addiction, alcohol, love and other highly emotional activities.

“Religious experience is perhaps the most influential part of how people make decisions that affect all of us, for good and for ill. Understanding what happens in the brain to contribute to those decisions is really important,” says Anderson. Unfortunately, I’d say that these decisions, being entirely emotional, are more negative than positive for us all.  This is an ongoing study and researchers admit they still know very little about how theology affects neuroscience.

But I don’t think it’s a mystery at all.  Religion is just delusion.  It is wishful thinking for the sake of wishful thinking and the brain reacts to religious delusion the same way it does to all delusion.  It triggers chemical rewards that cause elation and emotional highs.  So people feel good and repeated exposure to these chemicals just reinforces the behaviors that lead to them, actually increasing how people act religiously to continue to get greater and greater highs.  It’s all just stimulus response. There is nothing unusual about religious belief, in fact, I could have predicted exactly these results had someone asked me before the research began, as I’m sure a lot of the researchers could have as well.

So the next time your local theist tells you that he feels god, explain that science has now shown that he’s just feeling brain chemicals.  That’s all it is.  It’s the brain flooding itself with feel-good chemicals that make you feel like something is going on when nothing actually is.

Religion is a lie.  This is just more proof.

Horror Show Sunday: Testing God

What happens when you piss off the religious?  They resort to physical violence, as is the case in this week’s story, where a Minnesota pastor beat a 12-year old boy with an electrical cord because the boy “wanted to test God”.

Police charged Pastor Dong Wook Kim, 51 with two counts of second and third degree assault on a minor and one count of malicious punishment of a child.  Also charged was Kim’s son, Joo Seong Kim, who also took part in the attack.

The boy was found limping through the snow, wearing only basketball shorts and a t-shirt, pleading with strangers for help.  He was found to have a black eye, whip marks, scabs and bruises across his body, one reportedly as large as a football.  The assault went on over 4 days where the pastor and his son reportedly beat him with a plank of wood and an electrical cord to punish him for losing his faith.  Apparently, the boy’s parents knew all about this and did nothing to stop the abuse.  Eventually, both parents, Khun Kyaw Swa Moe, 41, and Lu Pan, 43, were charged with child endangerment.  The mother reported that she had heard Kim justifying his abusive behavior by quoting from the Bible, specifically “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” (Proverbs 22:15)

Between December 14-17, 2016, the boy was subjected to repeated abuse, including beatings, punches to the face and abdomen and even kicks to the face.  The pastor admits he “lost control”.  Yeah pal, I think you lost more than that.  In addition to the boy, his 4-year old sister was forced to stand with her hands over her head and starved, sometimes for days on end by the pastor.  Welcome to religious punishment, folks.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I’m not.  This is hardly the first time we’ve seen clergy freak out and beat people, sometimes even kill them, because they rejected their religious teachings.  Somehow, I doubt it will be the last time either. Religion is evil, after all.  That’s why Horror Show Sunday exists.

Horror Show Sunday: Two Sick Things That Go Bad Together

If you’ve read Horror Show Sunday for long, you know that sex abuse for clergy is absurdly common. I mean, if the religious aren’t out murdering people, they’re out raping children.  It’s kind of what the religious do.  But has anyone stopped to think what happens to these churches rocked with all of the sex scandals?  And what if two of these churches met each other in a dark alley?  Well today’s the day.

In Tennessee, two churches, both of which had current or former leadership that were engaged in hanky panky with children, have decided to take a hard look at things before they merge.

The Church at Schilling Farms had a youth pastor who molested at least 3 children 18 years ago.  Christopher Carwile was arrested and while Schilling Farms did terminate his employment, pastor Scott Payne refused to file any charges or cooperate with the police.  SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) demanded that the church terminate Payne for his lack of action and issued a statement saying, “Rev. Payne should have no role or position in any church or religious body and should be drummed out of the ministry and never again given a position in which he might again ignore or hide child sexual abuse, either known or suspected.”

Meanwhile, Highpoint Church, which was considering merging with Schilling Farms, has paused when it became known that one of their pastors, Timothy Christian Heinz, is a convicted rapist on the Tennessee assault registry for “aggravated sexual assault rape”.  This has been carefully hidden by the church and local news has been wondering, “It is beyond imagining why any church leader would attempt to keep the presence of a sex offender in church a secret. Why is the protection of a pedophile more important than protecting the children who are the potential victims?”  Why indeed.

Social media has exploded at the allegations, with religious sexual abuse victim Michael Hansen strongly criticizing Highpoint for agreeing to the merger.  “They had a chance to be on our side and to help us get the answers we needed in order to finally, at long last, receive justice. They’ve opted not to do that — instead engaging in protectionist behaviors and feigning interest in healing, something I’ve never asked for from them.  You had a chance, Highpoint, to be our partner in tackling the epidemic of child sexual abuse that is happening to this day in the Christian Church. You had a chance to shine a spotlight on Chris Carwile’s abuse and the Church’s systemic failure. You had a chance to collaborate with us on reform, both internal and within the law, to ensure justice for victims.

I really wonder just how many churches out there are hiding these kinds of skeletons in their closets, keeping known sexual predators right under the noses of unsuspecting parishioners.   It’s just more fodder for Horror Show Sunday down the road, I suppose.  And nobody seems to care.

Horror Show Sunday: Child Rape Divorce

I will never get the audacity of these religious criminals who don’t seem to even care if they are breaking the law.  In Pennsylvania, a youth pastor, Wesley Ryan Blackburn, who worked at Faith Brethren Bible Church in New Paris, was charged with 84 felony counts of statutory sexual assault, 84 misdemeanor counts of indecent assault and one felony count of corruption of minors.  He had raped and impregnated a teenage girl he met at church, as though that’s any surprise.  And you wonder why I don’t recommend people leave their innocent children with the religious.

But anyhow, after his wife confronted him for the crimes, he turns around and demands a divorce!  He says he no longer loves his wife, the mother of his 5 children.  I don’t know if he’s supposed to be in love with the teenage girl or what,  but that’s just adding insult to injury.  Not like he has to worry about divorce  because he’s going to be spending quite a while in prison.  And he doesn’t even seem to think that what he did was wrong.  When the church confronted him and terminated him, he refused to even talk to them.

“We didn’t even care what he had to say,” pastor James Espenshade. “We don’t tolerate this kind of stuff — it’s inappropriate, it’s reprehensible. There was never a discussion of anything else. We had to do what was right.”  There seems to be no shame in Blackburn, who was calmly packing his things when the police arrived.  He said he had been attracted to the girl since she was 13 and joined the church in 2009.  He freely admitted to having sex with and impregnating the girl.

He’s been arrested and held on $200,000 bail, but his wife refused to sign the divorce papers.  What an idiot.  But I guess religion even poisons people’s common sense.  That’s why we find these things so often on Horror Show Sunday.

Horror Show Sunday: Biblical Counseling

So long as we’re talking about church and sexual assault, I would be remiss from pointing out yet another example where sexual assault happens, everyone in a church knows it happens, yet it goes unreported to the police, even by the parents.

In Thornton, Colorado, assistant pastor Robert “Bob” Wyatt, pastor at the Agape Bible Church, was having an illegal sexual relationship with a 12 year old girl.  Now that’s bad enough on it’s own, but as long time readers of Horror Show Sunday know, it’s nothing at all uncommon.

But what is more shocking is that both the church and the parents knew it was happening and they all agreed not to go to the authorities for fear of what would happen to the pastor.  “Ultimately, Darrell [the head pastor] and [the girl’s parents] agreed to not report the sexual assault to the police or social services because they were concerned with what would happen to Bob,” court documents show.  This case would have gone unreported forever had a congregation member not stepped forward and gone to police after it became painfully obvious that there was no concern for what was going on with the child.

As bad as this is, it keeps getting worse as the father of the girl refused to let police talk to her because he “felt biblical counseling they would receive through the church was sufficient.”  Police trying to interview her said the father “was refusing to do anything to help her and was keeping her around the person who violated her” and he “made it clear his interest was in protecting the church and its reputation more than protecting his daughter.”

Can we really be surprised at any of this, given the absolute insanity that religious adherence spontaneously generates?  Luckily, Bob has been tried and convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison for repeatedly molesting an innocent child,  but religion still sold the victim down the river when people decided that their religious comfort meant more to them than her rights or even her life.

But honestly, what else is new?

Horror Show Sunday: Bathroom Abuse

The common sense exemption that we give to religion works even when the criminal isn’t part of the priesthood, as we see in this story.

Mark Richard, a 31-year old church usher at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church, has been arrested and is being held on $100,000 bond, for molesting a 7-year old child that he took to the bathroom for parents.  Of course, this is not the first time, just a year prior he was arrested for sexually assaulting a 2-year old boy in the same way.  No charges were filed in the first case.

“It’s just hurtful to know that I couldn’t get justice for my son, and he has to live with this situation,” said the mother of the first boy.  It continues to baffle me why parents would hand over their young children to random strangers during a church service, thinking that because they’re in a church, these people can be trusted.  You would never do that in a restaurant, if your child wanted to go to the bathroom and some kindly stranger, or even a waiter, offered to take them.  So why does religion get such a pass in society, especially when it’s painfully obvious that it doesn’t deserve it?

With all of the cases where the clergy and those serving in the church turn out to be child molesters and rapists and abusers, you’d think parents would wise up and stop leaving their innocent children with these potential pedophiles, but they don’t.  Nobody gives it a second thought before sending their kids off with these predators to private places where they can be abused. I find that fact shocking.  It makes no sense whatsoever.  But if the religious weren’t stupid, Horror Show Sunday wouldn’t exist, would it? So is it a problem that the priesthood is corrupt or is it that these parents are too stupid to live?  You decide.

Horror Show Sunday: Homeless Rape

Hey, you know last week when I said it won’t be too long before we get another pastor trying to get into a kid’s pants?  Well here we are again!  This time we get a Georgia pastor arrested for raping a 10-year old girl at a homeless shelter that he founded!

Danny Wells, who founded 7 Bridges to Recovery ministry in Smyrna, Georgia, and created The Garden, a homeless shelter, has been arrested for boinking a 10-year old girl.

Now Danny wasn’t a good guy to begin with, he’s already been imprisoned for drugs, firearms, money laundering and being involved with the mafia.  But he claims that one night, God came to him while he was in solitary confinement and promised that he would never leave him.

So I guess God was there watching while Wells was molesting the girl.  Wonder if God got off?

And as should be no surprise, the pastor’s church is supporting him, saying: “We firmly believe this is a false accusation and are praying that the truth will prevail. We trust that God is sovereign and even though this has taken us by surprise, it did not catch God by surprise. He will be glorified and bring good from this entire situation.”  Why are these delusional idiots always on the side of the molester?  I bet they couldn’t care less about the little girl that Wells’ actions have ruined.  But hey, what do you expect from the delusional?

Police are looking for other victims because where there’s one, there are usually more.  So who knows, maybe Danny Wells will wind up on Horror Show Sunday again sometime with a whole raft of new charges and new victims?  Can anyone say they’d be at all surprised?  I know I wouldn’t.  But that’s why Horror Show Sunday exists after all, to show that religion and religious beliefs are not harmless.  They actually hurt people and this is but one more example.

Horror Show Sunday: Child Predators on Dope

Hey, you don’t get headlines like this very often.  “Florida cops bust 22 suspected child predators in massive internet sting, including pastor and 46-year-old man who had meth and smoking pipe in his possession.”  It just evokes an interesting image, doesn’t it?

But of course, what we’re looking at here is the pastor, David Hoppenjan, pastor at First United Methodist Church of Pace, who was arrested after traveling to two different locations to have sex with a 14-year old boy.

“As a church, we take any allegation of clergy misconduct very seriously,” the Alabama-West Florida Conference said in a statement. “The United Methodist Church requires clergy to live by the highest ethical and moral standards. Conduct that violates these standards is a very serious matter and is not tolerated.”

Sure, they say that, all churches that get caught with clergy diddling kids say that, but it’s funny just how many churches continue to get caught with their pastor’s hands in the proverbial cookie jar.  And I keep reporting on them because clearly, there is a problem with these sexual predators getting high offices in religious organizations.  You’d think they’d have figured out how to keep these people out by now, but nope… they’re there, they’re always given unrestricted access to minors and trusted by parents because they are supposedly men of god.  You can’t tell me that these churches had no idea what their clergy is up to, that no one suspected that they were interested in more than the will of God, because they always know, they always suspect, but they never want to say a word, even when children are getting hurt.

Anyhow, Hoppenjan was convicted and sentenced to 21 months in prison and good riddance to him.  Hopefully he can never get another posting in any church anywhere in the world.  But we all know this won’t be the end of it, how long until yet another pastor, yet another priest, yet another supposed holy man gets caught with his pants down and his dick in an altar boy?  I’m willing to bet it won’t be long at all, and when it happens, Horror Show Sunday will be here to report on it.  Why won’t any of them learn?

Horror Show Sunday: Boko Haram Explodes Again

It’s been a little while since I talked about those fun-loving Muslim terrorists in Africa, Boko Haram, but hey, can’t forget about these mass murdering theists, can we?  Because they decided it would be a good idea to strap bomb vests to themselves and blow up several mosques in northeast Nigeria, killing 42 and injuring more than 100.

The first attack, at a mosque in Maiduguri and the home of Boko Haram itself, killed a mere 15 people, injuring many more, in an attack that came in the early morning hours.

The second attack was in Yola which killed 27 and injured 96 during a prayer ceremony meant to inaugurate a brand new mosque.  Religious and government officials comprised a large number of the dead.

So why do these idiots want to wipe out moderate Muslims and Christians, their two favorite targets?  Because anyone who doesn’t follow their extreme version of Sharia Law needs to die, according to their fanatical beliefs.  Boko Haram has allied themselves with ISIS, promising to bring radical Islam in the form of a Muslim Caliphate, to central and west Africa.  They’ve been doing a good job, well not with the caliphate idea, but with the murder idea, for over the past 6 years, they have killed an estimated 20,000 people and driven nearly 2.5 million from their homes.

And this is nothing new.  This story popped up about a year ago and they’re still at it.  Recently, Boko Haram attacked an outdoor market, where a female suicide bomber in northeastern Nigeria, killing nearly 30 and injuring 83.

Fiyaso Soyomb, Editor of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting in Nigeria, said that Boko Haram likes to use female suicide bombers because they’re harder to detect. What a bunch of sweeties these terrorists are, right?

It’s no surprise that Islam continues to be one of the top performers here on Horror Show Sunday.  They are the curse that keeps on giving.  And it isn’t like these are ethnic warriors, or cultural combatants, no, these are out-and-out religious terrorists who want nothing more than to murder anyone and everyone that doesn’t follow their extreme religious views. Unfortunately, we really don’t talk about them much in the mainstream press, mostly because you cannot argue that they are doing anything but murdering for religious reasons.  But that’s what all of these religious terrorists are doing, hiding from that fact solves nothing.

Horror Show Sunday: More Murders in Bangladesh

Seriously, I need to rename this “Horror Show Islam” because it seems like I’m talking about nothing else lately.  Not a day goes by lately when some story of Islamic barbarism doesn’t pop up.  It isn’t like the other religions are getting better, Islam is just getting worse.  So here we go again, the religion of peace is off murdering people.

And it’s our favorite spot, Bangladesh, where Muslims again decide they’re going to hack the heads off of atheists because… religion.  This time, Nazimuddin Samad, a 26-year old law student who posted on Facebook that he opposed Islam wound up very dead, attacked by machete-wielding assailants near near his university in Dhaka while shouting Allahu Akbar.

“They hacked his head with a machete. As he fell down, one of them shot him in the head with a pistol from close range. He died on the spot,”  said Syed Nurul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

This the sixth murder of vocal atheists in 15 months in Bangladesh and has sparked protests by thousands of college students.  “You just can’t kill a man just because he is an atheist!” shouted one protestor, but hey, this is the religion of peace, they can kill anyone they want for any reason they want because they’re offended by reality, damn it!

Amnesty International said Samad’s killing was a “blatant attack on the right to freedom of expression”, urging Bangladesh to take action to end the violence.  Samad’s name was on a list of 84 atheist activists that a hardline Islamist group had sent to the home ministry in 2013.  So they have known for 4 years who the targets are, they simply have not taken steps to protect them.

“The persistent failure of the Bangladeshi government and the international community to ‎better protect threatened thinkers has created a climate of fear and direct threat to free thought in the country,” PEN America said in a statement.

When you have no fear of death or retribution because you have an imaginary friend that promises you 72 virgins, secular law holds no fear for you either, which is why there is so much violence in the Islamic world.  These people are fanatics and the only way you can deal with fanatics is to kill them.  You cannot reason with the religious fundamentalist.  They will not listen.  So long as we continue to baby these religious monsters, they will continue to head Horror Show Sunday.  This cannot continue.

Horror Show Sunday: It’s Your Own Fault!

I hate to keep doing stories on Islam, but there are so many of them!  This time, a radical Muslim cleric declares that Syrian migrants who went on a rampage and attacked and raped women in Germany on New Year’s Eve, well it was the fault of the women for “dressing inappropriately and wearing perfume”.

Imam Sami Abu-Yusuf, a leading Muslim figure in Cologne, Germany, head of the Al Tawheed mosque which is affiliated with the fundamentalist Salafi movement, said, “The events of New Year’s Eve were the girls own fault, because they were half naked and wearing perfume. It is not surprising the men wanted to attack them.”  Sure, those poor Muslim boys didn’t do nothing wrong.  Tell us another one.

Of course, this isn’t at all uncommon in fundamentalist Islamic circles.  Last year, Pakistani politician Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that “women wearing jeans can cause earthquakes and inflation.”  There is something seriously wrong with these religious idiots.

By now, everyone knows that Europe is suffering a huge amount of violence at the hands if migrant Muslims, parts of Sweden have so many organized Muslim rape gangs that the police are completely overwhelmed and are now telling women not to go out after dark because there are not enough police to protect them.  This isn’t a migrant problem, it’s a Muslim problem and far too many Muslims think it’s perfectly fine.  This is how Islam, at least fundamentalist Islam, is.  Even its own clergy is saying it’s not only acceptable, it’s to be expected!  These people are animals.  There is no other way to describe them.

So it’s no surprise that they keep winding up on the top of the Horror Show Sunday pile.  I’ve done months of stories on Islam alone because Islam, particularly the virulent fundamentalist variety, has done nothing but cause problems for the world.  Why anyone supports this religion of violence, I will never understand.

Horror Show Sunday: Off With His Head

It’s really a shame that Turkey, once a bastion of secularism in the Middle East, has become yet another Muslim cesspool, and along with it, all of the violence and hatred associated with Islam has become commonplace.

Take this example, the body of a gay man named Muhammad Wisam Sankari was found, headless and mutilated.  Sankari had fled his native homeland of Syria a year ago, citing fear for his life, living as a gay man in a predominantly Muslim country, but Turkey didn’t prove to be any safer for him.

“They cut Wisam violently. It was so violent, two knives had broken inside of him. They beheaded him. His upper body was beyond recognition, his internal organs were out. We recognized our friend from his trousers,” said a friend who identified his headless body.

Almost immediately after arriving, he began to be harassed by local Muslim gangs.  Apparently, he was once kidnapped, beaten and raped by a gang of young Muslims.  Unfortunately, in Turkey, violence against homosexuals is largely ignored by the police because homosexuality, while ostensibly legal, is frowned upon by the government.  Last year, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas into a gay pride parade to break them up.

Unfortunately for Syrian gay men, they have few options because most are in the country illegally and cannot go to the police, who mostly ignore their reports anyhow.  Violence is mostly caused by ultra-conservative Muslims and a recent uptick in anti-gay rhetoric based on religion has been seen in their mainstream media.

Of course, with the continued radicalization of Muslims in Turkey, things will get a lot worse before we see them getting any better.  People are even complaining that the United Nations isn’t doing enough to protect gay people in Turkey.  But what can they do when the religion of violence is involved, especially since the liberal UN refuses to even acknowledge what the problem is.  And that’s why these cases are becoming more and more prevalent on Horror Show Sunday.  Because Islam is a violent religion and it’s only getting stronger.  We need to stop it now.

Horror Show Sunday: Underage Religious Offerings

And you wonder why so many people hate Islam?  Well, here we go again. In Afghanistan, a Muslim cleric was arrested after he married a 6-year old girl.  Because somehow, that’s a good idea, I guess.

Mohammad Karim, a Muslim cleric somewhere in his 60s, was arrested after he married a 6-year old girl, that apparently had been given to him as a “gift” by her parents.  News flash for you pal, you cannot give humans as gifts.

Of course, the parents say the girl was kidnapped from from Herat province, bordering Iran and they had no idea that some old guy with a beard had made her his bride.  Now I have no idea who to believe because it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see religious parents handing over their child to a religious pervert, thinking it will get them in good with Allah.  It isn’t like it hasn’t happened before.  Anyhow, the parents are on the way to collect their daughter from a woman’s shelter in Ghor, where, not at all surprising, a 14-year old pregnant girl was recently lit on fire.  Because that’s also something that happens in Islam.  How anyone thinks this is the religion of peace is beyond me.  It’s the religion of violence and child molestation.

“So many children who are married off at a young age are deprived of their right to education, safety and the ability to make choices about their future,” says the charity Save the Children.  “This is such a fundamental breach of a child’s basic rights.”

This isn’t that long after another  young woman was beaten to death and accused of adultery, and a woman named Farkhunda was accused of burning a Qur’an, beaten and set on fire.  Because these are honestly very, very common in Muslim majority countries like Afghanistan.  When you follow a religion that treats women like second class citizens and follows a prophet that molested children, what can you expect?

I know what I expect.  I expect even more Muslim violence and murder in upcoming weeks on Horror Show Sunday.  This is what happens when you allow the religiously insane to run amok.  It isn’t stopping any time soon.

Two Kinds of Theists

Two kinds of theists, both absurd.

The more that I think about it, the more I realize that there are really two distinct kinds of theists in the world.  You have the fanatics and the idiots.  On the one side, you have the people who believe what they believe and nothing in the world is ever going to stop them from believing it because they simply cannot be convinced that what they believe is wrong for any reason.  On the other, you get the people who couldn’t care less if what they believe is true because they simply feel good believing and facts just don’t matter.

I really don’t understand either kind.

Both sides are completely emotional, they believe for entirely emotional reasons, it makes them feel good to think what they think, whether what they think is factually correct or not.  That’s something that I simply cannot intellectually comprehend. This is especially true when you realize that both groups are making claims about the state of reality, then not caring if their claims about reality are actually indicative of reality itself.  That is the most ridiculous thing I can imagine.

How can you argue that something is so and then not care if that thing is actually so?  What’s the point, aside from mindless emotionalism?  Are these people so dense that they can’t see that they’re holding a position for only emotional reasons?  Don’t they care?  What’s wrong with them?

That’s the question I find myself continually asking.  What is wrong with these people, that they would trade their intellectual integrity for emotional comfort?  That they would willingly believe in a lie, just because it gives them some of those feel-good chemicals in the brain.  And then that they would argue, sometimes to the extreme, for these false positions, just because it makes them feel good.  Are they incapable of seeing just how fallacious this is?  I guess so.

But while I might be able to understand the fanatics, after all, they have something seriously wrong with them upstairs, the other side is the side that confuses me the most.  These are the people who are smart enough to see how wrong they are, they just don’t care.  Their intellect is so compartmentalized that turning off rational thought when it comes to religion is second nature.  I doubt they even know they are doing it.  I just don’t  get it.

In the end, the more I interact with the religious, the less respect I have for them, in fact, the more disgust I feel for having to deal with their slimy beliefs.  There is something seriously wrong with them, that they toss out their intellectual integrity for emotional comfort, that’s the lowest possible common denominator and it makes them barely human, at least when it comes to their faith.  But that’s what faith is, the lowest common denominator.  It’s all sad.

Horror Show Sunday: Mutilation For Allah

When Putin is involved, you know it’s religious insanity.

Let’s just make it a whole month of Islamic insanity with this story of a Russian mufti calling for genital mutilation for all women, everywhere.

Mufti Ismail Berdiyev, a senior Muslim cleric that leads a Muslim association for the North Caucasus region, has announced that universal female genital mutilation “could be applied to all women, that would be very good”.

Good for who, exactly?

Berdiyev said that female genital mutilation doesn’t stop women from fulfilling their sole role as mothers and that applied universally, “there would be less fornication”.    Berdiyev later retracted his statements as a “joke” but we all know he wasn’t.

And not to be left out, controversial Russian Orthodox cleric Vsevolod Chaplin stepped in and said that Muslims have a right to their “time-honoured tradition”.  After all, “you probably don’t need to ‘circumcise’ all women, there’s no need with Orthodox women as they don’t fornicate anyway.”  Two religious nutballs doubling down on religious insanity.  Joy.

This came up after Russian Justice Group released a report on some remote villages in the North Caucasus region of Dagestan who engaged in female genital mutilation.  The report said that in Dagestan the practice has gone “without any attention whatsoever from the authorities”.  “In Dagestan, most of society is still not ready to admit that this problem exists,” it said, adding that female genital mutilation has “almost total support” in certain villages where it is seen as a “compulsory ritual” to control sexual desire.

Now I might be able to see it if people in remote areas without any credible education agreed with female genital mutilation.  They just don’t know any better.   But when a major religious figure in a generally civilized nation says it?  You know this is a major problem that needs to be addressed.  It’s bad enough that it happens, it’s worse when someone like Berdiyev actively supports it and wants the use of mutilation expanded worldwide.  That’s when you know that Islam, as a whole, is a cancer that needs to be wiped out.  But that’s what we do here on Horror Show Sunday, we point these things out so that the world can act.  Too bad the world is so damn slow.

Horror Show Sunday: Don’t Stand So Close To Me

I’d say call The Police, but they’re probably the ones who were whipping you.

Might as well continue with the Muslim insanity, as a young woman in Indonesia gets caned 23 times because she was accused of “standing too close” to her boyfriend.

Seven men and six women were flogged for what is described as “inappropriate contact” outside of a mosque in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. The province operates under strict Islamic law.

One man was beaten for “spending time in a secret place which could lead to adultery”.  He didn’t do anything wrong, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person.

A young woman had her sentence delayed because she was pregnant, but the deputy mayor of Aceh reassured the crowd that “the punishment will be handed down after she gives birth.”

Banda Aceh, which lies on the island of Sumatra, has followed strict Sharia law since 2001, when they received special dispensation to do so.  More and more women are being abused for supposed “crimes” under Sharia than ever before as the fanatical Muslims gain more power.

Is it any wonder that nobody in their right mind wants Sharia law anywhere remotely close to civilized society?  Because this simply isn’t civilized behavior.  This is exactly why Sharia law needs to be strenuously opposed everywhere in the western world.  People who practice these beliefs and follow these laws really have no place in America.  We’ve seen what the radical Islamic poison is doing to Europe, we simply cannot allow it here.

I honestly wish I could say I was surprised at any of this, but I can’t because this is the norm that we see coming out of the Islamic world on a daily basis.  Violence, cruelty and religious insanity grace the pages of Horror Show Sunday on an ever increasing basis.  Why anyone would support these animals is beyond me.
