As long as we’re talking about abuse done in the name of religion, we might as well cover this story about a woman in Indiana who beat her 7-year old son with a coat hanger, then tried to justify the whole thing by proclaiming she has “religious freedom”. Yes, some people are that stupid.
Kin Park Thaing, 30, argued in court that she beat her 7-year old son with a coat hanger in accordance with her Christian religious values and therefore, no one has any right to hold her accountable for her actions. She specifically quoted Proverbs 23:13, which states, “Do not withhold discipline from a child: if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.”
When she was arrested, she said “I was worried for my son’s salvation with God after he dies, I decided to punish my son to prevent him from hurting my daughter and to help him learn how to behave as God would want him to.” Because these were her deeply held beliefs, she asked that the case be dismissed under the newly passed Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, but was luckily denied. At least some people have half a brain in their heads.
Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry has been expecting the religious to try exactly this. “We predicted this was exactly was going to happen, is individuals would assert their religious freedom to justify what is clearly criminal conduct.” Even though Thaing is a refugee from Myanmar, that isn’t an excuse for physical violence against a child in the name of religion. But I expect this kind of thing to continue because the highly religious are more concerned with their religious beliefs than they are with their civic responsibilities. That’s why cases like this will continue to show up on Horror Show Sunday, because the religious are animals and far too many people are happy to allow them to be animals because offending someone’s ridiculous religious beliefs is simply not acceptable.
I beg to differ.
