Debate Stupidity
Now for those of you who read the earlier incarnation of this blog, you know I often posted about debates I was involved with and quite often, I pointed out the absurdity of it all in the double standards that people had about religion in general.
Well here we go again.
First, there’s a little set-up. There was a long-running thread entitled “Why People Believe in God”. It was going along swimmingly until a fundamentalist whackjob showed up, posted something about faith and then immediately said “I don’t want to talk about it!” Well that’s all well and good, I suppose, although it strikes me as absolutely moronic that you’d log onto a debate forum, post in a debate thread and then demand that you don’t want to talk about it. If you really don’t want to talk about it, why are you posting in the first place? Well, as you may well imagine, people took that post and ran with it, addressing the comment about faith with or without the permission or participation of the original poster.
Of course, the original poster didn’t much like this so she started another thread whining about people talking about her words when she made it clear that she didn’t want to talk about it. Just so you really understand what’s going on here, let me spell it out for you. She didn’t want to talk about her original post. She also didn’t want anyone else talking about her original post. She thinks she gets to post with immunity and demand censorship of anyone who dares to question or comment on her words. And what’s worse, for someone who doesn’t want to talk about any of it, she keeps responding to everyone telling them she doesn’t want to talk about it! When you point out that she could easily stop having a conniption by simply not responding any more, she gets more upset and screams how she doesn’t want to talk about it!
Yes, she is that stupid. But she’s not alone. Along the way, those wonderful apologists and non-theist accomodationists have come out of the woodwork too. Oh, we don’t dare ever say anything that might offend a theist, they might get their precious little feelings hurt!
Yeah, cry me a river. If you took that view on everything, you couldn’t have a debate forum in the first place. Hey, can’t talk about politics, someone might get offended you’re criticizing their political views! We don’t dare discuss racism, the white supremacists or the black racists might get bothered that you don’t like their views. We can’t even talk about television, what will the people who like shows that are unpopular, or dislike shows that are popular do? We don’t dare say anything about anything to anyone for fear that someone, somewhere just might get offended.
Screw that. Religion isn’t a sacred cow. It follows the same rules as everything else. If someone wants to criticize religion, so be it. So long as they aren’t directly criticizing a particular individual, it’s entirely fine and dandy. However, those wonderful dim-witted theists can’t tell the difference between a personal insult and a criticism of something they happen to believe. If someone says something bad about their cherished, heartfelt beliefs, they take it as an attack upon their person and react in kind. Can you imagine how the world would work if everyone did that for everything they believed? It would be chaos.
Therefore, I’m going to offer a little bit of advice to theists and accomodationists alike. Stop acting like the whole world revolves around you. It doesn’t. Just because you believe some bit of ridiculous nonsense doesn’t mean that anyone who insults that ridiculous nonsense is talking about you. Almost certainly they are not and therefore, getting offended over something that doesn’t concern you at all is absurd. But of course, if these people were thinking logically to begin with, they wouldn’t believe in imaginary father figures in the sky to begin with, would they?
