Horror Show Sunday: Testing God

What happens when you piss off the religious?  They resort to physical violence, as is the case in this week’s story, where a Minnesota pastor beat a 12-year old boy with an electrical cord because the boy “wanted to test God”.

Police charged Pastor Dong Wook Kim, 51 with two counts of second and third degree assault on a minor and one count of malicious punishment of a child.  Also charged was Kim’s son, Joo Seong Kim, who also took part in the attack.

The boy was found limping through the snow, wearing only basketball shorts and a t-shirt, pleading with strangers for help.  He was found to have a black eye, whip marks, scabs and bruises across his body, one reportedly as large as a football.  The assault went on over 4 days where the pastor and his son reportedly beat him with a plank of wood and an electrical cord to punish him for losing his faith.  Apparently, the boy’s parents knew all about this and did nothing to stop the abuse.  Eventually, both parents, Khun Kyaw Swa Moe, 41, and Lu Pan, 43, were charged with child endangerment.  The mother reported that she had heard Kim justifying his abusive behavior by quoting from the Bible, specifically “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” (Proverbs 22:15)

Between December 14-17, 2016, the boy was subjected to repeated abuse, including beatings, punches to the face and abdomen and even kicks to the face.  The pastor admits he “lost control”.  Yeah pal, I think you lost more than that.  In addition to the boy, his 4-year old sister was forced to stand with her hands over her head and starved, sometimes for days on end by the pastor.  Welcome to religious punishment, folks.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I’m not.  This is hardly the first time we’ve seen clergy freak out and beat people, sometimes even kill them, because they rejected their religious teachings.  Somehow, I doubt it will be the last time either. Religion is evil, after all.  That’s why Horror Show Sunday exists.
