Religion is a curse upon humanity, if curses were real and weren’t caused by conscious decisions made by people who ought to know better, but can’t because they believe idiotic nonsense. So here we go again, with religion causing death and destruction in its wake. What else is new?
Mayar Mohamed Mousa died following religiously-motivated genital mutilation in Egypt. While FGM has been illegal in Egypt since 2008, and it’s really disgusting that it remained legal that long, but strongly religious families still practice it as a means of “purifying” their daughers. Mayar’s twin sister successfully underwent the procedure, just before a second surgery brought her life to an end.
It isn’t like this was a surgery carried out in sub-standard conditions by unqualified people. An actual doctor carried out the procedure at Egypt’s El Canal National Hospital. The hospital was shut down by authorities following Mayar’s death and the doctor will be prosecuted. “We have been vigilant in monitoring for these cases and we have increased our focus. But we have not seen anything like this in recent months. This is a very dangerous and bad practice that must end,” said Dr Lotfi Abdel-Samee, the health ministry undersecretary in the Suez province.
“Criminalization isn’t enough,” said Dalia Abdelhameed, the gender and women’s rights officer at the Egypt-based Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights. “The national campaigns have to confront the root causes that propel the families to circumcise their daughters in hopes of controlling their sexual desires.” Yes they do, but that root cause is Islam and I seriously doubt anyone will ever do anything about it.
FGM is a widespread practice in Islam, with some sects insisting that it is mandatory, particularly Sunni sects. While it doesn’t appear anywhere in the Qur’an, it certainly does in various hadiths, including Al-Muwatta, 2 19.75, which says:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Said ibn al-Musayyab that Abu Musa al-Ashari came to A’isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said to her, “The disagreement of the companions in a matter which I hate to bring before you has distressed me.” She said, “What is that? You did not ask your mother about it, so ask me.” He said, “A man penetrates his wife, but becomes listless and does not ejaculate. She said, “When the circumcised part passes the circumcised part ghusl is obligatory Abu Musa added, “I shall never ask anyone about this after you.”
But Shia sects are not immune. Imam Al-Sadiq writes in his hadith that “circumcision is makrumah for women”, meaning it is a noble deed. That anyone would believe this in the modern day is disgusting.
But then again, this is Islam we’re talking about. Disgusting is what lands them on Horror Show Sunday.
