Oh look, another Catholic priest sexually abusing boys! Because that never happens, right? Former bishop Peter Ball has been jailed following his admission that he used “religion as a cloak” to cover his sexual misconduct in the 70s and 80s. The 83-year old former Catholic bishop was sentenced to 32 months in prison for his indiscretions and the Catholic Church pretended to be shocked about it all, but it’s since come out that the Church knew all about the abuse and did absolutely nothing about it.
Back in 1992, a case arose where Ball molested Cliff James, who approached a member of the clergy with the allegation, yet the Church did absolutely nothing about it. James believes that the clergy cared more about the reputation of the Church than the safety of the victims. In another case in 1993, Ball had molested a 16-year old trainee monk named Neil Todd. He was warned by his superiors, but allowed to continue working with the church until 2010. Even Ball’s gardener and housekeeper said they tried to raise concerns to Ball’s superiors and were ignored. This seems to be a very common complaint among those who try to blow the whistle on pedophile Catholic priests.
Now I wouldn’t say if this was an isolated incident, but it isn’t. Far from it. And this isn’t a single case of the Catholic hierarchy not taking claims of abuse seriously. This is a demonstrable pattern that happens all the time. And even though the RCC claims they have changed their ways, we’re not seeing any more priests being proactively turned over to the police for prosecution than we ever have in the past. They’re just getting better at hiding them.
So that’s another one down, who knows how many more to go. It won’t be the Catholic Church which helps bring these sexual predators to justice though, they will do everything in their power to keep them safe, in power and protected from prosecution as they always have. They don’t want to admit they have a problem. I guess they like showing up on Horror Show Monday.
