Horror Show Sunday: Another One Down

It seems we can hardly go a month without another atheist blogger getting hacked to death by overzealous Muslims in Bangladesh.  Therefore, it should come as no surprise at all that… well, here we go again.

Blogger Niloy Neel was hacked to death in his home in the Goran area of Dhaka by an extremist Muslim gang armed with machetes. This makes him the fourth atheist blogger to be so murdered in just under a year.

Imran H. Sarkar, head of the Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network, described Neel as an anti-radical voice of reason.  “He was the voice against fundamentalism and extremism and was even a voice for minority rights – especially women’s rights and the rights of indigenous people.”

Well, we certainly can’t have that, which is why radical Muslims murdered him by chopping him into little pieces.  There’s that good old religion of peace!

There is a list of 84 “atheist bloggers” that was drawn up in 2013 and widely distributed and extremists are just going down the list, murdering anyone who happens not to agree with their radical religious beliefs.  I guess that’s 4 down, 80 to go.  Not all of these bloggers are, in fact, atheists, they have just been labeled that way so Muslims have an excuse to kill them and keep their secular message down.

Six masked men gained access to Neel’s home and murdered him.  His wife was home, but was uninjured, kept separately in a different room.  Critics say that the government is indifferent to the murders, either afraid or unwilling to take steps to protect these bloggers from the radical Muslims who seek to do them harm.  There is a disturbing pattern that has emerged regarding these killings, many of the killers have direct and distinct ties to Muslim madrassas where radical messages are taught and violence against heretics is encouraged.  These madrassa-borne killers, operating under a common label of Hefajat-e-Islam, have held large rallies in Dhaka, threatening to topple the government if they interfere with their divine justice.  The government, apparently afraid of these threats, has gone so far to jail five other bloggers for “hurting the religious feelings of Muslims”.  I guess it’s better to be in jail than hacked to death in the streets, but not by much.

So that’s another one down. The list is getting shorter and you can be guaranteed that with each additional murder, they’ll end up on Horror Show Sunday.  I don’t think this one is going away any time soon.
