Religious beliefs and traditions, no matter how well intentioned, are still idiotic in the modern world and still cause demonstrable harm. Take the case of an Orthodox Jewish mother in Brooklyn, New York, who was observing the Sabbath prohibition against lighting a flame. Therefore, she was running a hot plate, the hot plate caused a fire that raced through the house and killed seven children, aged 5 to 16, who were trapped by the flames in an upstairs bedroom. Only the mother, Gayle Sassoon, and a 15-year old girl survived the fire. Wait a minute, they’re not allowed to do any work and I think jumping out of a window to safety counts! I call foul!
Local firefighters describe this as the worst house fire in Brooklyn in eight years. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio walked the burned out rubble and declared “You can literally see what was a home for a large, strong family and now it’s wiped out, every room empty, burned and charred. This is a tragedy that has very few examples to look at, it’s so painful, it’s so difficult.” Well sure it’s difficult, it’s difficult because all of this could have been avoided if these idiots didn’t have such ridiculously stupid religious beliefs. It was their own fault they were placed into danger and that seven innocent children died.
Now this is a tragedy to be sure, but when neighbors found the mother, charred black from the heat and flames, on the front lawn, they report that she was screaming “Save my children, save my children!” Well why the hell wasn’t she screaming for Yahweh to save her children? You’d think that such an observant Orthodox Jew would ask her god to do something, but apparently, she recognizes that asking God for anything is a total waste of time. At least she had that right.
The father, who was not home at the time, rarely talks to neighbors, preferring to spend all of his time reading religious texts. Maybe he should have been reading the fire code because the home had no smoke alarms on the first or second floor, something that very well might have saved the lives of his children. Or, he could just give up his primitive and idiotic beliefs, that would have saved them all right there. So once again, we have religion directly responsible for demonstrable harm and nobody will say a thing about it. Nobody but me, right here on Horror Show Saturday.
