Sometimes it only takes a news headline to explain it all: “Guru who ordered 400 followers to be castrated ‘so they could be closer to God’ is investigated for grievous bodily harm in India.” Nah, you think? Sounds perfect for Horror Show Monday.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim, head of the Dera Sacha Sauda organisation based in Haryana state in India is being investigated by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation after he reportedly told 400 of his male followers to submit to voluntary castration so they could meet god and you know what’s worse? A lot of them did it! One of the followers, Hansraj Chauhan, came forward and has filed suit against Rahim, probably in a high voice. Chauhan reports that he was castrated at Rahim’s ashram by doctors at Rahim’s behest.
No surprise, this isn’t Rahim’s first run in with the law, he’s also being investigated for the 2002 murder of a journalist as well as claims that he’s sexually molested female followers. You just knew sex had to come into it somewhere.
This is also not the only case of this type, India is plagued by these Hindu mystics who pretend to have magical powers in order to mislead gullible followers. I’ve written about several of these in the past, but in an utterly bizarre case, Shri Ashutosh Maharaj, one of the wealthiest of these gurus, died and his body was put in a freezer, but his followers are fighting against government attempts to have him removed, insisting that he’s only meditating. In a freezer. Frozen solid. Sure guys, whatever you say. Some people will believe anything.
So how many of you would chop off body parts to meet God? I know I sure wouldn’t, especially since it seems that good old Rahim hasn’t done it himself, at least according to female followers who found themselves on the wrong side of the bedsheets. I wish I could say I’m surprised that people are so gullible, but all I have to do is read the Religious Horror Show and I come to my senses.
