Sometimes horrors come individually and sometimes, as Paris, France unfortunately found out, they cluster. Following the horrific attack on the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo by brothers Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, there was more to come as Amedy Coulibaly attacked a Jewish kosher grocery store in Paris, taking hostages for an hours-long standoff and eventually killing four before being brought down by police.
However, sometimes there are heroes in what many would find the most unexpected places. Lassana Bathily, a Muslim man working at the Jewish grocery store, hastily pushed several Jewish customers into the walk-in freezer to shield them from what could have become a much larger bloodbath. Bathily was handcuffed for about 90 minutes following the event while police ensured he wasn’t part of the terrorist group. It is sad that he was treated that way and certainly deserves to be hailed as a hero by all. This is just more proof that not all Muslims are bad and should not be automatically assumed to be.
It has been discovered that Amedy Coulibaly, in a video made public two days after the attack, in which he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, described himself as a soldier of the caliphate, and pledged himself to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Coulibaly coordinated attacks with Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, the two who murdered 12 people in an attack the same day on the Charlie Hebdo magazine. “We did some things together, some things separate – that way we would have more of an impact … we arranged it to synchronise [our movements] so we would go out at the same time, which was not a problem,” he said. Coulibaly’s wife, Hayat Boumeddiene, is also suspected in planning the attacks, but has already fled France and is thought to be headed to Syria. Anyhow, here’s the video, it is in French.
Seriously, when are they going to stop saying that this isn’t religious and that religion doesn’t harm anyone? Tell that to the four that lay dead at the hands of Amedy Coulibaly. Or the 12 that are dead because of Chérif and Saïd Kouachi. You know, those people who were screaming “Allahu Akbar” and proclaiming that the Prophet Muhammad had been avenged? Nah, nothing religious in that at all! Je Suis Charlie! It’s no surprise this ends up on Horror Show Wednesday.
