Horror Show Sunday: Conflicted Messages in Islam

Mohammad IqbalThis is going to be another Religious Horror Week, there are just too many of these awful stories of religious damage to restrict it to one day a week.  However, I’ve been doing a lot of sex abuse stories lately and I’m frankly tired of them, so this week, in honor of Halloween, it’s all going to be about murder and other horrific things.  Fitting, eh?

It doesn’t really get more horrific than this.  In Pakistan, that bastion of religious tolerance and fair treatment, a man, Muhummad Iqbal, husband of Farzana Parveen, who was beaten to death outside of a courthouse by 20 male relatives, even though she was pregnant, has declared that he wants justice for his wife.  Well, for his second wife because Muhammad actually murdered his first wife by strangling her so he could marry Parveen.  His family used Islamic provisions in Pakistan’s legal system to get him out of being punished for his act of murder.

Isn’t Islam great?

Of course, do what I say, not as I do, Muhummad is trying to keep his second wife’s killers from using the exact same provisions that kept him out of prison in his first wife’s murder.  Apparently, it’s acceptable because, as Muhummad said, “I was in love with Farzana and killed my first wife because of this love.”  Sure, sounds kosher.

Parveen was in court after her family claimed that she had been kidnapped and forced into marrying Iqbal, who had neglected to ask their permission to marry their daughter.  Iqbal counter-charged that Parveen’s father was upset because he refused to pay a sizeable bribe to her father.  Following the trial, 20 male relatives surrounded Parveen and beat her to death in an event that reportedly lasted more than 15 minutes.  Parveen’s father was arrested and charged with her murder, but he wasn’t sorry, he said that she had dishonored the family and therefore had to die.

About the only good thing to come from this tragedy is the outrage within Pakistan.  The UN high commissioner for human rights, Navi Pillay, said Pakistan must take “urgent and strong measures to put an end to the continuous stream of so-called ‘honour killings’ and other forms of violence against women”.  According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, there were almost 900 so-called honor killings in 2013 alone, but this is likely a low-ball figure because many such killings go unreported.

This isn’t a matter of loss of honor, it’s a matter of stupidity of religion and culture.  This is what happens when countries allow religion to run roughshod over the law.  People can get away with literal murder when they claim that Allah made them do it.

Fuck these people.  Put all of these people to death for dishonoring the human species.  What a way to start off the week on Horror Show Sunday.

  1. According to you, liberals are the cause of all of the world's problems. You are a sophistic one horse pony trick. You use hatred for profit.

    1. I make no money whatsoever, so hard to see where there's a profit. And if you want to pick any particular issue to debate from a liberal perspective, I welcome it. Liberals typically are incapable of debating intellectually.

      1. Thanks for allowing me to post. I see you believe in free speech. It would be fun for me.__BTW, I was on debate politics a long time. I was the first member there to be banned in the basement. I had a lot of friends there who I really miss. Do a search for me there and you will know more about me. I am busy now but I'll e back__Thanks again, sir.

        1. Why wouldn't I allow you to post? My rules are very clearly stated and I don't censor anyone. I think I remember you from DP but I never go into the Basement, it never appealed to me.
