Horror Show Sunday: Oops, Sorry About That

Rabbi Mordechai RosenbergWhile I’m not nearly so anti-circumcision as many other a theists, I think it’s an outdated practice that has no medical benefits and truly ought to  be left to the individual when they reach the age of reason, whether or not they want to have a part of their body surgically removed.  That said though, this just hurts.

This week on Horror Show Sunday, Rabbi Mordechai Rosenberg, a Jewish mohel is being sued by the parents of a young boy because the Rabbi botched the bris and accidentally amputated the boy’s penis.  The event happened at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill district of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  According to CBS News, the penis was surgically reattached during an 8-hour long procedure that required 6 blood transfusions, requiring the boy to spend 2 months in the hospital.  No one will know for many years if the procedure was truly successful, it is highly likely that there was nerve damage and the boy may never be totally normal sexually.

Rabbi Rosenberg is a  “certified mohel by the American Board of Ritual Circumcision” but lacks any demonstrable medical training. According to his website, “a doctor’s medical circumcision, usually performed in the hospital, is not considered valid according to Jewish law.”  I guess hacking off a baby’s genitals is somehow valid?  How about giving blowjobs to infants?  Yup, that’s valid too!

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any independent oversight of mohels, even though he’s permanently disfigured an infant boy, he’s still out there performing circumcisions.  We’ve done stories in the past showing that Ultra Orthodox Rabbis are refusing to follow the law or to even consider revising or regulating their practices, as far as they’re concerned, they answer to a higher order and they get to do what they want, no matter who it hurts.

And you wonder why I totally reject religion and all of it’s harmful practices?  This is just idiotic.  Another entry in the Religious Horror Show.
