Horror Show Sunday: The Catholic Cover-up Continues

Curtis Wehmeyer
He was a well-known abuser and protected and ignored. No wonder he’s on Horror Show Sunday.

We all know that Catholic Priests have been molesting children for a very, very, very long time.  That’s not a secret, but while the Vatican acknowledges that it has happened, the official story is that it’s vastly diminished and that the RCC is cooperating with authorities to make sure that any priest that’s caught with their hands down the pants of an altar boy is immediately removed from contact with children, rendered into police custody and that any evidence the church can provide, any aid they can give to police to see these men tried and convicted of their crimes against innocent children, that’s the new goal of Catholicism.

Except that’s complete bullshit.  We keep finding that the Church has known about abuse for a long time and either they simply allow it to continue, or they do their level best to hide the offending pedophile priest from the proper authorities and sweep it all under the rug.

The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota was well aware that Father Curtis Wehmeyer was sexually abusing minors for many years. Beginning in 2005, the Archdiocese found out that Wehmeyer was engaging in improper contact with children, yet they turned a blind eye to it.  Even as late as 2011, vicar general, Rev. Kevin McDonough, released a memo specifically recommending that Father Wehmeyer’s activities not be reported to parish employees.  Among McDonough’s job duties were overseeing the archdiocese’s efforts to keep young children safe from sexual abuse.

As far back as 2006, McDonough was informed that Wehmeyer was caught by police in an area known for “anonymous same-sex sexual encounters.” He was also made aware of a 2004 incident where Wehmeyer asked two men in a bookstore, “are you fucking horny right now?”  It was made known that Mehmeyer had a serious problem with sexual addiction and had violated the Catholic code of conduct on several occasions.  Wehmeyer was also reported three times in 2009 alone for sexually propositioning other priests, yet with all of this information at his disposal, McDonough personally named Wehmeyer to pastor two local parishes, the same year Mcdonough said, in an interview, that the archdiocese’s top priority was to protect children from priestly sexual abuse.  Wehmeyer was finally stopped in 2012 when the parents of two boys reported that he had lured them into a camper, gotten them drunk and fondled them while he showed them pornography.  He’s currently in prison, serving a 5-year term.  Rev. Kevin McDonough finally resigned his position in September, 2013, nearly a year after Wehmeyer’s conviction.  What took him so long?

Of course, this is a worldwide problem as well.  I recently reported on The Bitchspot Report Podcast, the case of the Catholic Commission for Employment Relations in Australia was under the impression that there was an “understanding” with the police that it was fine and dandy for them to hide evidence of priest sex abuse from the authorities.  According to CCER executive director Michael McDonald wrote to the child protection squad, asking them if the memorandum of understanding, dated June 18, 2003, which he thought granted them special dispensation to conceal evidence against pedophile priests, was still in force.  According to authorities, no such document has ever been in force, nor would they ever agree to such a thing.  This means, however, that the Catholic Church in that area of Australia has been operating under the assumption that they had no requirement to turn over sex offenders for more than 10 years.  This, according to insiders, means that hundreds of cases were mishandled and that potentially dozens of molesting priests were let off the hook, transferred around and generally protected from legal prosecution.

Now I have to ask you, who in their right mind would ever think that it is okay to withhold information from the police about sex abuse?  I don’t care what memorandum you think is in force, who would ever think this kind of thing is acceptable?  Apparently, the Catholic Church, who doesn’t seem to have the same kind of moral compass as the rest of us decent folk.  How can they justify these actions?  They can’t, but I suspect they don’t care.  It doesn’t matter how many children are harmed, so long as they can keep the image of the church from stinking too badly.

Seriously, does anyone really think that the Catholic Church is really dedicated to ferreting out these molesting monsters?  These two cases prove otherwise.  It’s why the RCC spends so much time in the Religious Horror Show.

  1. The more I read about the RCC the more I start to think like a conspiracy theorist about these stories. It really seems that it is just a big sex/pedophilia cult. Case in point when I read this "Among McDonough’s job duties were overseeing the archdiocese’s efforts to keep young children safe from sexual abuse." I mean if you are making a known sex offender look after children then it reeks of some kind of cult/criminal organization

I really have to try be rational, but there is clearly something upthat needs to be exposed in a way that garners all the press attention it deserves. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later.

    1. This is hardly the only case of this, the RCC doesn't use any common sense and it doesn't use any oversight. There was a recent story out of Australia where the Catholic Church honestly thought that it wasn't required to report pedophile priests to the police for a period of more than 10 years. Honestly, who in their right mind could ever think that the police are going to give them special dispensation not to report crimes? Yet that's the kind of thinking common within the Catholic Church. They don't have to watch anyone, it'll all police itself! They don't have to tell anyone if they find criminals in their midst, it's not their job! This kind of thing happens all the time, yet they never learn!
