Horror Show Sunday – Christian Sex Cult?

Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba
Get undressed, I’m Jesus!

Hey, why not?  Officials in Mexico have broken up a sex-slavery ring.  Not really an appropriate story for the Religious Horror Show, you might think?  Not so!

This was a religious cult, called “Defensores de Cristo” or “Defenders of Christ”, which recruited women to have sex with their leader, a Spanish man, Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba, who claimed he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.  Recruits to the religion were forced into virtual slavery, required to work for the good of the group, or sexual slavery, where members were forced to operate as prostitutes to provide money for “tithes” to the church.

In a raid performed near Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, a dozen people from across central and south America and several from Spain, were detained by police, from a house that was filled with many cult members, primarily  women and children, who were living in filthy conditions.

Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba reportedly came to Mexico about 3 years ago, after having spent time in various areas in South America.    He started offering new-age classes, such as “bio-programming”, but this quickly evolved into claims that he was the second coming of Christ.  Members reported that he would display pictures of himself alongside pictures of Jesus in an attempt to show that his features are identical to those of Jesus.  Apparently, these people are too stupid to realize that we have no photographs of Jesus, all we have are artist interpretations of what they think Jesus might have looked like.  But I guess if you’re going to fall for something like this, you can’t be too bright to begin with.

According to Myrna Garcia, with Support Network for Cult Victims, “He made them believe he was Christ, like Christ, they have to adore him, if not they will lose their souls … they have to give their lives for him.”  She went on to say, “There were women who were forced into prostitution, it was a form of human trafficking that was extraordinarily effective from the criminal point of view because the women were terrified of being separated from the sect.”

While it’s easy to argue that this is just a man who has mislead women for his own devices, the fact remains that these women had to believe what he was saying.  It’s faith, particularly Christian faith, that has failed these people and made them vulnerable to such a predator.  Anyone with an ounce of skepticism would never believe a guy who said “Hey baby, I’m Jesus, let’s fuck!”

I feel sorry for these people who were taken advantage of, but it’s still a good example of the kind of horrors that religious belief and blind faith can bring people to.
