Since the world ends in a few short hours, I suppose I ought to get this off my chest. It’s been bugging me for a while now and I guess it depends on one’s point of view, but I think I tend to cover quite a few controversial topics here, especially from a perspective that is not common among atheists. You’d think that would engender a lot of discussion and debate, not only from theists, but from atheists as well. After all, I’m coming from a more conservative bent, many atheists come from a more liberal bent, there’s bound to be disagreement, right?
However, not only do some of my most controversial posts go virtually without any comment, they typically go almost virtually unread as well. I used to think that a post that got few, if any comments, was one that most people agreed with me on, after all, most people don’t just post “good job!” for no reason, they usually either have some kind of comment, some good, most bad. Most people are going to say something if they think the post is wrong in some way or they disagree with the conclusions. However, if nobody even reads the post, clearly they can’t know if they agree or disagree with it so I’m left scratching my head. Sure, maybe the subject matter of one or two posts might not interest a lot of people, I know I don’t bother reading every post on every blog I follow, but to have hardly anyone read a post? I don’t get what’s going on. To have a post that has been out there for more than 2 weeks and still has only 28 hits total and no comments? What’s worse, the day it was posted, I told someone on Twitter exactly what was going to happen and it all came true. There’s something happening. I just can’t put my finger on it.
I suppose what really bugs me is that a lot of these stories have taken a lot of time and effort to put together and to see them be ignored makes me wonder why I bother. If I can just put up mindless fluff pieces and have them get attention, have them get tweeted, have them get Stumbled and reddit’d, if I can just toss out the same stuff that every other blog is doing, with the same viewpoint, and get a reaction, why should I bother to work hard to provide different stories and a unique viewpoint?
I don’t know, I’m just ranting, I suppose. It’s disheartening and makes me wonder why I bother. Not that it really matters, it’s all over in 13 hours anyhow.
