Today is Thanksgiving and I suppose there are a few things for which I ought to be thankful as well as some things for which I am certainly not. Because I’ll be busy for most of the day, I’d like to make a short list to differentiate between the two:
Thankful:
- I have a wonderful family upon whom I can rely.
- I live in a nation where I have the freedom to speak my mind freely whether anyone else likes it or not.
- I cannot be easily killed or maimed, nor have my house burned down because I don’t follow someone’s imaginary friend.
- That my Constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of religion extends to freedom from religion.
- That even though superstitious belief is still in the majority, non-religion is trending higher.
- I’m thankful that, even though I detest a lot of what Obama is doing in office, Bush is gone. It’s not necessarily a win but it’s certainly an improvement.
- As a supplement to the last, at least Obama recognizes the non-religious as a vital part of our nation. That’s certainly a breath of fresh air.
Not Thankful:
- I live in a nation that is, at least currently, overrun with the superstitious and religiously insane, where the idea that one ought to support the idea of a magic man in the sky and reject the clear and overwhelming evidence for evolution is even entertained.
- There are far too many idiotic liberal theists out there and worst yet, they’ve got a following of clueless accomodationist atheists who don’t comprehend that making friends is not as important as seeking truth.
- The economic downturn is still being bandaged, not fixed. The same goes for healthcare. Politicians are afraid to actually tackle the real problems because it might cost them political campaign contributions.
Some issues obviously still need to be addressed, but there are more good things than bad things going on right now and I’m at least vaguely optimistic that in time, some things will work themselves out.
So how about you? What are you thankful for and what do you think still needs work?
