Sex Abuse Cases – They’re Doing It Wrong
Looks like the Catholic Church is in hot water again. Can anyone say they’re surprised? In Kansas City, MO, the bishop has been accused of hiding accusations of sexual misdeeds as well as lawsuit settlements from the public.
“Despite a national sex abuse policy that mandates openness and despite Bishop Finn’s repeated promises to be open about clergy sex cases, at least in this diocese, it’s business as usual,” said David Clohessy, executive director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.
Bishop Robert Finn, who is currently wandering through the Holy Land and could not comment, is said to have withheld information about charged priest sex offenders retired-bishop Joseph Hart and former-auxiliary-bishop Joseph Vincent Sullivan. Last year, the diocese settled a $10 million lawsuit against Hart and contributed $10,000 toward a case filed against Sullivan in Hawaii, but neither case was ever made public, as required by diocese rules, until specifically questioned on the subject by a reporter.
Unfortunately, this is nothing we should be surprised at. There’s been a long history of Catholic deception with their ongoing sex scandal lawsuits. First, they hide misconduct from the police and move known pedophile priests around to avoid arrest, then they try to buy off witnesses and bribe the molested, threatening them with excommunication and hellfire for daring to bring suit against the priests, then they try to go bankrupt to avoid paying out large settlements and finally, they try to hide the details of the settlements from the public do avoid public humiliation. Something has to be done to force these religious charlatans to be honest and follow the rules, both the law and their own internal requirements to be transparent about the lawsuits.
Somehow, I doubt that’s going to happen. The Catholic Church has too much money on the line to be open and honest about much of anything. They’re too busy trying to attract Anglicans into their fold to give their next generation of pedophile priests something to go after.
