Michael Behe: Fluttering Alone in the Wind
Just a quick story about the infamous Michael Behe, the man who popularized the term “irreducible complexity” and who made a fool of himself on the stand at the Dover Trial. Apparently, he’s made such a fool of himself that even the university for whom he works is distancing themselves from him.
Lehigh University, according to their published statements, “are unequivocal in their support of evolutionary theory, which has its roots in the seminal work of Charles Darwin and has been supported by findings accumulated over 140 years.” That’s pretty much expected from any respected university, but Lehigh has a problem. On their payroll, they have a certain Michael Behe who ignores the above statement and isn’t quiet about it. Therefore, Lehigh has to purposely point out that they think Behe is a loon.
They continue their published position with this: “The sole dissenter from this position, Prof. Michael Behe, is a well-known proponent of “intelligent design.” While we respect Prof. Behe’s right to express his views, they are his alone and are in no way endorsed by the department. It is our collective position that intelligent design has no basis in science, has not been tested experimentally, and should not be regarded as scientific.”
In other words “we have this guy on our staff who is a whackjob but we can’t get rid of him so we’ll put up with his insane rantings, pat him on the head and let him think that we’re not laughing at him behind his back.”
I’ll give Lehigh this much, they at least publically addressed Behe’s embarassing membership on their staff. Other universities would keep the whole thing quiet, like the crazy old uncle that lives in the attic. Good show, Lehigh!
