Another One Out on his Priestly Ass

FrJohnWCalicottBecause you can never have too many priests molesting kids, here we go again.  At least the Archdiocese of Chicago has booted  the bad boy in a collar to the curb.  Now former-priest John Calicott, lately of the Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, located in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood, has been removed from his duties due to accusations that he molested two teenagers while stationed at St. Ailbe Catholic Church in the south of Chicago.

“We feel it’s a vindication that they finally acknowledged what we are saying is the truth,” said Fred Arceneaux, now 46, one of the boys allegedly abused by Calicott. “This is always going to be a part of my life. This has had a direct impact on where I am now, how I relate to my church and my family.”

However, if that’s all there was to the story, I wouldn’t bother reporting it.  Tons of priests are being tossed out of the ministry because they can’t keep their hands off the altarboys.  However, in this case, we can see how the Catholic Church specifically enables these priests to keep on serving.

In 1994, after the charges were first made, Father Calicott was relieved of his duties and placed on leave pending an investigation of the 1976 crime.  A year later, ostensibly due to widespread support for the priest by parishoners, he was reinstated by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin where he was allowed to continue having close, unsupervised contact with children.  in 2002, however, he was again discharged after the explosion of priest abuse lawsuits got started in earnest with the Boston case.  The zero-tolerance policy adopted by the American Catholic Church required them to purge anyone who had ever recived a credible accusation of molestation and Calicott certainly qualitied.

However, in 2004, he was asked by the Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church to come in an teach students on issues including human sexuality.  Although he was officially barred from living in the rectory, he still did and was in close contact with children during his tenure at the church. Finally, Cardinal Francis George petitioned the Vatican for a ruling on Calicott’s official priestly status and he was permanently removed.

“Cardinal George’s responsibility doesn’t end here,” she said. “Catholic officials can’t recruit, educate, ordain, hire, transfer and shield predator priests, then when the heat gets too intense, deny any responsibility for them,” says Barbara Dorris, outreach director of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.  Unfortunately, that’s exactly what they continue to do, apparently with the full knowledge and approval of the Vatican.  There’s no denying that Pope Sidious, in issuing his infamous order to shield pedophile priests from prosecution, is at least partially and directly responsible for what’s going on.

And people wonder why the Religious Horror Show exists.
