I’ll try to type this with my legs crossed.
A father in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada has been convicted of negligence causing bodily harm for a botched home-circumcision performed on his then 4-year old son. The man, identified only as D.J.W. was involved in a motorcycle accident in 2002 that left both him and his wife brain damaged. This started him on a long-term crusade to be “right with God”. He got the really stupid idea into his head that both he and his 4-year old son needed to be circumcised for Passover.
The problem is, rabbis refused to perform the surgery, either because the family wasn’t Jewish or because the boy was deemed too young for general anesthesia and so he decided he was going to do it himself. At home. With information gained over the Internet. I’m sure you can see where this is going.
His first botched attempt on himself left him bleeding uncontrollably which required a trip to the emergency room and stitches. Undeterred, he did some more research and found a product used in the veternary trade called BloodStop. However, it was expensive and he couldn’t afford it so he turned to a cheaper product, used on horses, called Wonder Dust
In January 2006, after buying a supply of razor blades, he asked his 4-year old son if he wanted to be “just like dad”. Of course, the boy said yes and after giving the boy some mead, a Biblical concoction made from honey, he grabbed a razor, stretched the boy’s penis across a cutting board and sliced off parts of his foreskin.
He was asked by the court if he couldn’t have used ice to stop some of the pain and swelling and the man responded “where would the Israelites have found ice?”
When social workers found the boy walking with his legs spread wide apart, the whole horrible story came out. They removed all of the children from the home and doctors finished the botched circumcision rather than risk lifetime deformity and complications. The father was arrested, even though his lawyer has argued that the man’s desire to fulfil his religious duty negated any criminal intent. Sometimes I just want to shoot stupid fucking lawyers. No, make that most of the time.
The court found that not only could the boy not have legally consented, but the father ought to have known that this was a procedure that could only be legally performed by a licensed doctor. “Indeed his motivations could be characterized as selfish or even deluded insofar as he believed that he was unable to live in his home at Passover with any uncircumcised male, including his four-year-old son,” wrote the judge in her ruling.
At least the children have been removed from the house of these brain-damaged religious zealots and let’s hope they are never given back. While sentencing has not yet been handed down, one thing is certain, this belongs squarely in the Religious Horror Show.
Religion causes no harm indeed.
