Travelocity is pissing me off

Late last week, we booked our hotel for our annual summer trek to San Diego Comicon.  We booked it through AAA as we always do because we get better discounts that way and everything worked out exactly as it always does.  We got the room, we got the confirmation e-mail, no problem, right?

Wrong.

This morning, the charge for the room showed up on our online statement.  What?  We’re not even travelocitysucksgoing to stay in the room for 6 months, why are we being charged?  So I call the hotel and get a huge run-around.  It’s a new program they’ve had running for a couple of months where you pay for your room up front.

Now wait a minute, what complete moron would knowingly give their money, interest-free, to a hotel for 6 months?  Beyond it being a completely stupid idea, it also came completely out of the blue, there was no indication whatsoever on the AAA site that they were going to do this and I certainly never authorized it, I was simply reserving a room.  Now it’s apparently going to take 48 hours or more for them to handle the issue.

I went back over the confirmation e-mail with a fine-tooth comb and indeed, in the fine print at the bottom, written in legalese, it says “ADVANCED DEPOSIT REQD 14 DAYS AFTER BOOKING CREDIT CARD DEPOSIT DEPOSIT OF 100 PCT OF 1 NIGHT STAY REQUIRED”.  Um… first off, putting it in the fine print isn’t sufficient and secondly, they not only charged for the ENTIRE stay, but they didn’t wait 14 days either, the charge was put through the next day.  Sorry, I guess that giving them interest-free use of your money for 6 months is supposed to get you a $15 discount… who the hell cares?  I’ll make more than that letting the money sit in the bank until I need it!

Someone’s head is going to roll for this.   I called AAA and talked to a really nice lady who gave me the direct number to Travelocity, who handles all their hotel reservations.  Then I sat on hold on the phone with Travelocity for nearly an hour, talking to supervisor after supervisor while they denied any responsibility or care for the error.  Everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else, nobody is interested in just fixing the problem.  All it takes is “oops, we’re sorry, let us fix that for you” and be done with it.  They all refuse.  Finally, they said they’ll file a complaint against the hotel chain and pass the information over to their marketing managers that handle the account, but that’s the best I could get out of them.

While I know it’s not directly AAA’s fault, if this is how their services will be handled and their treatment of their members will be so poor, I may have to rethink using their services in the future.
